Title: vectra b front end knocking
Post by: mcd840 on 16 March 2014, 19:53:33
as above, when travelling at low speeds on bumpy roads there is a knocking which can be heard / felt through the car at the front , both front drop links have been replaced as one of them was full of play, everything else at the front is sold, arb bushes, wishbones, ball joints, track rods, the car also had new shocks and strut top bearings around 2 years ago also but doubt its anything to do with that,  I thought that the new drop links would have solved this but it hasnt, any thoughts on what else ? been told it could be top mounts but think that's  just a guess.

I would guess at top mounts, Both my Astra 17 td estate (97 reg) and the Vectra C Taxi that I used to drive last year did a similar thing ... at least check them out as they fail often (main cause is speed bumps I was told) ! If it's the top mounts it's usually more of a knock than a thud if that makes sense, they are a bugger to change on the astra as the nuts at the top of the shock legs is usually very tight (don't know about the vectra b though)

Vectra B front suspension is different to the Vectra C, which as suggested is prone to snapped springs and dead drop links and not much else tbh...

My money is on failed drop links or balljoints... cheap crap parts often have a lifetime measured in weeks rather than years. Even better quality pattern parts struggle to last much past 20k miles, but cheap droplinks rarely make it to 10k :-\

Unless cash is tight and you enjoy swapping the same bits over and over, fit genuine... should then be good for another 70-80k :y

Might also be the rear engine mount, although that tends to produce a heavier knock :-\

Pray its not the rose bushes  :D drop drop link s or wrongly fitted arb bushes or incorrect arb bushes  :-\

front drop links are brand new, arb bushes on front end are solid, as for the rear the rose bushes were all changed and arb bushes with genuine gm.

everything else on the front was checked and turned out to be solid, ball joints, wishbone etc, guy who fitted said it could be top mounts at a guess.

Possibly and i was told this on my Vec B , i replaced the drop links and wishbones and the noise went away  :y

Could also be a loose CV joint....

A member on another Vx forum had issues with a knocking from the front, he changed everything he could to do with suspension, it turned out to be the CV joint was loose in the cup... changed the CV joint for new and it went away...
