Off to look at one in the morning (to get me through while I get the estate sorted), being an existing owner (2.2) I know the general Omega problems. Anything specific to the 2.5 I should be look for?
I've looked over the outside and other than a little rust on the rear edge of passenger door all looks ok.

Engine wise (as you know other bits), oil leaks around cam covers (pull a couple of plug leads on drivers side, looking for oil (other 4 inaccessible)), or any fluid leaks. Any signs of oil in coolant. Engine should idle silky smooth, and be responsive to throttle

Most important thing IMHO is ignition on without starting it and check that all the right lights show on the dashboard ... EML especially !! Then do the paperclip test and ensure it flashes as it should .. just in case someone has rewired it !!
Then its check the coolant for contamination, then for antifreeze .. too much of one and nowt of the other are both BAD
Oil system .. check for "mayo", check around the cam covers for leaks, if possible check a couple of plug wells for oil.
Ask for paperwork regarding cam belt changes, if none available budget for a change ASAP.
Start it up and leave to idle whilst holding the top hose ... check that the thermostat opens properly by a surge of HOT water .. not a gradual warming up .. if the latter it needs a thermostat change :(
Once warmed up set the heating to HOT and make sure it all works as it should .. then set COLD and leave it to check the air con (if fitted), then check the HBV for leaks
that should cover some of the major hiccups ... :)

Take the spare wheel out and check for root in there, that seens to be the first place they start. :y

usual checks always show the extra cost..
drive the car on a bad road..
check the tyres condition for wear and tear if unusual wear there are geometry problems..
also 4 new tyres cost dearly..
measure the distances of tyres to bumpers for equality..
check all gaps to be parallel and same width..
check the idle both when cold and hot..
check ac , sunroof , windows , rear curtain for proper operation etc etc..
check for irregular bearing noises.. oil, coolant leaks (coolant leak not easy to detect though)
but usually 2.5 have many places to loose coolant..
and test all gears on the tranny..

Thank you for all the advice, I went for it as not having a car was becoming a real pain!
Certainly plenty more power available for the V6, I have always been very happy with the 4 pot but this really goes. Seems to handle much much better than my 2.2 estate also, so if I manage to get that going again something to look at there.
I think out of the tick list to look at all was ok with exception that AC does not work, but for the price I'm happy.

PS the cat was supervising and seemed to give his approval once he had finished rubbing everything!
