Your ISP cannot provide you with infrastructure level AV, and I'm not aware of any providing anything for anything other than Windows.

No AV available for Apple tablets, as they can only run Apple approved software, thus making traditional viruses more difficult to spread (but not impossible, not that Apple would agree.

Virtually all the AV vendors who make Android AV say its ineffective due to the architecture of Android, but most can detect (but not repair) some (but not all) viruses.

There is nothing a tablet can do that a mobile phone can't. Nobody needs a tablet as such. They are just a nice thing to have. Bigger screen but more convenient than a laptop.

Mobile devices are secure for internet access. More so than windows machines.

Apple most secure, due to restrictive nature, but expensive(not that you'll notice given the needs posted)
Android tablets probably suit your needs better on cost tbh.

Not necessarily.

If the op has a mobile capable of wifi hotspot/tethering there's no point having a 3G enabled tablet.

Although, if the op has a tethering capable mobile phone, then arguably, he doesn't "need" a tablet at all.

Most banks have dedicated apps, which is the preferred method. A mobile screen is probably too small for proper internet banking, IMHO. Workable, but too much of a risk to miss something on a page as you scroll/zoom around it.

Aren't Lloyds and TSB split now? Anyway, you'll need to search the appropriate app store (App Store for Apple, Google Play for Android, Windows Store for Windows Mobile) for an appropriate app.  If none available, then you'll have to revert to old fashioned technology..  ..a web browser ;D

Do you not have access to a PC, as some banking apps will not allow payments to new payees, for example, without being created via a proper browser first.

Google play, search lloyds bank and download it :y

You need to be registered for internet banking though, which takes a week or so... if urgent Phonebank might be better, again if you're registered... 0845 3000 000 :y

I use lookout on my iPad and android, free version is good, but you can backup contacts, photos etc., with premium, £2 a month. The same account will work on all your devices for one payment.

mobile is another device Chris..  and I wouldnt like to use dongle or connect mobile to tablet just for internet use..

and I wouldnt like a huge mobile either..

and as for safety,  any telecom network pro can easily sniff your packets and none of the "secure" bank applications are secure as you think..

Yes ok, but what about the op...? Its for him remember, not you/me/us. :)

I'm aware a mobile phone is another device ::) . Question is, does the op have one capable of tethering?

My tablets are wifi only. I tend to only use at home, or hotels etc, rather than carry everywhere, so Wifi only is no issue. Although I have a MiFi unit as well, and the ability to tether to phone.

cem - if you control the entire network, including the end user devices, then yes, you can snoop packets. If not, the SSL infrastructure is as secure as the crypto used in the SSL.  In the UK, to gain PCI compliance (which any company dealing with financial transactions online must have), you need to specifically disable and reject known weak SSL (such as SSLv1 and SSLv2).

SSL itself even is not too secure.. just google it..

Indeed, plenty of Crypto flaws in some implementations of SSL. However, PCI compliance, as said, demand that all weak versions are disabled, and PCI compliance is mandatory for any online service handling financial transactions.

Indeed :y some, like Cardnet, place compliance responsibility with the merchant... Others like PayPal, take responsibility by ensuring their systems comply :y

A/V - anti virus.
As TheBoy has already pointed out anti virus is pointless on Apple and Android tablets.

Currys will always try to sell you insurance and other crap you don't need to boost their income.

If you plan on going to Turkey then follow CEMs advice and get a more expensive tablet that can connect to the internet using a telephone SIM card.

If you don't find a laptop that suits then BigGriffin is on to something with the Tesco Hudl

If you can tether from your phone, then consider one of theses...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sony-Tablet-S-16GB-Wi-Fi-9-4in-Black-/201053447857?pt=UK_iPad_Tablets_eReaders&hash=item2ecfb826b1

They do 32 and 64gb versions, but if it's just for banking/emails 16gb should be ample :y

Don't worry, pscocoa doesn't understand mobile web either. ;D

A tablet is, essentially, a mobile phone with a bigger screen. Apples software between a tablet and a mobile phone is almost identical.

So, with a tablet, you need to decide where your going to use it. If just for home use, then then your home wifi internet access will give better performance than the the 3G mobile network you use on your mobile phone. So you need a wifi only model, and it will be cheaper.

If using a tablet out and about, away from home, then you need a tablet with access to the mobile phone network. Hence it will need a SIM card just like a mobile phone. So you need a wifi AND 3G enabled tablet.

UNLESS... Ypu have a mobile phone capable of tethering. In which case you can have the best of both worlds, as you can connect the tablet to the mobile phone and use the data on your mobile to download from the internet, through the mobile, to the tablet.

BUT all Tablets are touch screen. So the accuracy of touch is still going to be a slight issue, although improved, as the virtual  key board is proportionately bigger according to the size of the device.

Seems you need to decide if you want a touch screen device at all. If you do, what mobile phone do you have? You need to know if it is capable of tethering. :)

You can make anything sound techy if you want to. Buy a tablet (for your needs I would suggest cheap android), switch it on, connect to wifi and you're away. If you can tinker with cars you'll have no trouble finding your way around a tablet.
If you have problems setting it up, pm me, don't ask on here or you'll be confused, very confused. ;D
