There was a time when wonder wheels was best. Mildly acidic, and will probably melt modern paints clean off. Horrid stuff.
Looking for a spray on rinse of type job. There a lot of welded on brake dust on the inner rim, even though the outside face is pretty clean after the Kosovans had a go at it.
-
let me know what you find ;) My Merc's wheels need a good cleaning .... I suspect that I'll just need a large tub of elbow grease & polish (& a suitable jack to remove them ;D)
-
Road grit works a treat...
Seriously. That salt/molasses combo works wonders...
Try a table spoon of salt and one of sugar dissolved in a cup of warm water...
Test on a spare wheel, rinse and Wax/polish to finish :y

Enough water to make a syrup/treacle consistency?
-
Enough to dissolve the salt and sugar... Brush on as a liquid. Washing the wheel with washing up liguid first to shift the loose stuff then apply the solution as you would wonder wheels :y

I'll give that a go when I remove mine to clean the insides too :y :y

I suggest washing up liquid as it doesn't contain the wax or coating properties of car shampoos...

I believe that washing up liquid contains lots of salt .......... it's to break down the grease from your dishes
-
Quite possibly :-\ point is, it won't leave a protective layer over any remaining residue after an initial wash :y

A lot of the pro valeters seem to use this stuff. Personally I have no idea, the last time I washed my car was 2 years ago when I bought it. Actually I think the dealer washed it. So I guess I have never given it a wash or paid for it to be washed.
-
Whatever shit the Kosos use. Probably paint stripper ;D
-
I use TFR.
traffic film remover. Removes everything, dirt, grime, bird poo and skin if used undiluted. Then wash with a car shampoo.
or go to lokal car wash and get them to do it.

::) ???
wheels are painted with the same metallic paint and laquer (clearcoat) .. so whatever is harmful for your car paint is valid also for wheels..
problem with brake dust is when its mixed up with mud and let for long, it sticks to laquer surface .. you can always use paint protector wax (used on car paint) to clean them without harming the surface.. first wash, then apply one layer and buff with a soft towel once in a month.. they wil have less dust than before..
-
I only use AG wheel cleaner, its a 1 hit type of thing where you spray onto the wheel, let it dwell for about 5 mins and then rinse off..... gets shut of brake dust too :)

Fair enough, but body paint doesn't get covered in brake dust..?

The wheels do get alot hotter though :-\
-
Yes heat transfer from the
brakes breaks. ::)

how about bird poo ;D
problem is brake dust is let there for a long time :-\ and also they are hot when they hit the surface of wheel :(

Right, so what to use? Kosovans have already washed the wheels, with similar methods as the rest of the car, plus their wheel cleaner, yet the brake dust remains.
-
if Kosos have cleaned wheels, but unable to move brake dust, you're probably in realms of refurb
-
If there is brake dust remaining after a wash, you could get a product called Iron-X that will remove 99% of the brake dust, regardless as to whether it is embedded into the paint/lacquer on the wheel or not...
-

Already done. As said in post 1. Outside surface is clean. The inner surface of the wheel rim is still peppered.
May I refer Mr Admin Sir to post 1.

...and bird poo comes off with basic washing. In case the body shop specialist hasn't noticed.

paste with wax.. but if your car washed weekly at least ,you wont have that dust problem or you are making very high mileage daily :-\
-
I can recommend a solution ..
buy some scratch resistant laquer , sand the surface of wheels with 500 wet than let them sprayed with 6-7 coats ..
then you can polish/paste them even everyday ;D
-
seriously wax prevent brake dust setting on them at least minimizes
I guess refurbish centers dont use the most expensive and hard laquer just for wheels..

Weekly? In winter? With floods? It hasn't been washed for weeks.
So, cem, what to use? Dtm's RobG's and Minifreeks suggestions all look viable. :)

winter or summer, brake dust stick with static electric load you must wash them :-\
-
my cars are always washed several times a week ;D

CEM. read post 1.
Question is, what potion to remove brake break dust What product to use.
Clearly you have no idea as usual. ;D
-
I'll try one of the products suggested. Thanks for those. :y
-
When we have a half decent winter, the muck they spread on the roads does wonders for shifting baked on brake dust, hence my initial suggestion... should be almost free too, assuming you possess salt and sugar :y

no need to re-read post 1 .. just wash your car regularly and wax it ;)
and you can paste them for now!

and dont use or let someone use any acidic chemical on your wheel paint.. for any reason!

Not sure he's in tbh.

No fun ::)

A lot of the chaps on detailing world use the thing in my link above. Results look spectacular on the web as well. But as I said, no personal experience per se.
-
Once the wheel is clean you could use a wheel sealant too, it just sprays on and lasts fora couple of washes too :)
-
Decent wax and polish will have the same, if not better results :y
-
Quite true that Al as the wheel sealant is silicone based I think....

finally sound of logic :) :y

Valetpro bilberry wheel cleaner
i got some of that stuff too, expensive but works well....
-
I use Concept alloy wheel cleaner, available through unipart stockists, its bloody strong though and plays hell with hands and eyes if the spray drifts but does do a very good job on badly soiled rims :y :y
This is the stuff

Better with a non-acid based wheel cleaner really as the acid eats its way into the alloy...

Only if the paint/laquer is damaged...
A wheel in good condition should be fine :y as per instructions on all wheel cleaners... 'Do not use on damaged surfaces'...
-
bird poo is acidic and remember what it makes to even brand new cars paint

Gave this a go today. Works very well but it doesn't half give off some fumes. I'd advise gloves as well, unlike me, my hands stink of dissolved alloy. ;D
