Title: running temperature
Post by: Toledodude1973 on 24 March 2014, 20:43:27
Took the car on a run over the weekend an had trouble with windows misting up , a real job to clear without opening sunroof for an air flow. All seemed ok once cleared however on return (150mile journey) i noticed temp gauge was showing the mark before the 80(i.e. half way from 0 to 80 Is this connected to de-misting problem? appreciate any help thanks

Guess it's possible. Normal temp would be 85 ish.
All drains clear?

Mmmm. The vents in the boot cubby too?
These are usually the issues. And were with mine though I do find the odd problem at times. My Aircon doesn't work atm which probably doesn't help either.

Aircon working as advertised  :-\

Not exactly ice cold, what do you make of the running temperature Al ?

85-90 normal... does the thermostat work?

If stat stuck open, then it never warms up properly, only reaching temp if leftvidling withnaircon off and heater on cold ime :-\

Add in weak/not working aircon and misting becomes a real issue...

Aircon on does the pulley centre spin?

Mine was misting up this morning,I seem to remember reading something on here about switching the control to recirculate and then back to auto, so I did and misting vanished again.
Worked for me ,seemed to reset the system somehow :)

I will try that FD when i find the method on here thanks, Al would the stat come into the picture doing say 70mph for a good distance?

Before my top end rebuild my v6 took a few miles to get to temp

Fitting a new stat reminded me how quick a v6 should reach (and maintain) its temp.

They do get lazy :y

No because the airflow over the rad keeps the temp down...

Start it from cold, heater on cold and aircon off.  Hold on to the top hose. If it heats up slowly then stat is goosed. If after ten minutes or so there's a rush of hot water, then stat is fine :y

Just do as FD said, he may have got it from my post a little while ago.
Just push the recirculate button on and then off, it totally cured my misting.
The engine doesn't need to be up to temperature either.
The heating ecu forgets where the flap is and turning on and off re-sets it.
Its steaming up because your re-circulating warm damp air from inside the car.
Also make sure the aircon is working ok as this also dries the air, but note,
the aircon does not come on below 5 deg. (according to a previous post).
The outside air would be cold enough anyway.
It also helps, if you turn off the rear seat vents and the middle front, it sends
more air to the screen vent.
My temp gauge runs just under 85 deg, which seems to be normal according to the group.

Tried turning off heater , started engine and felt top hose ,didnt warm up after 5mins whatsoever.  Also just did town run and temp needle didnt rise from stop for 3 miles , is this pointing to thermostat?

James did mine, and spoke of a "bastard bolt"!
Reminded me of the short and sometimes convoluted transfer hose on the BMC 'A' Series engine - anyone else remember it? - it went between the block and the head and was another inspiration for colourful language!

Thanks all i'm going to give it a go , just ordered thermostat from dealers. regarding the "b" bolt is this what holds transfer pipe securely, read the guide , one thing do i leave thermostat in place and pull pipe out or would you undo thermostat and wiggle/pull off that way? thanks everyone

Hammer and cold chisel most effective way of liberating the transfer pipe :y

Hence the suggestion to buy a new one before starting... especially if they're on back order :-\

No worries  :y

Reading Tildas thread, you might struggle to get one anywhen soon from Vauxhall :-\

A few weeks ago, when James did mine, he got one from "Drive vauxhall" at Burt St. Edmunds - anywhere near you?
I don't have their phone number to hand, sorry.

Nice one :y

The american sourced pipes are fine as a last resort, but expensive compared to the thermostats :-\

I have had experience of this from a Ford Galaxy years ago. is the seal between the engine bay and the heater area ok. the galaxy one was missing and when i replaced it, this was cured.
Hope this helps.

Yes alls fine it that area Jay thanks, symptoms seem to point to thermostat ;taking ages for temp gauge to rise up to anything even on town runs. It eventually gets to normal in town so gauge is working.

another cause for misting up inside windscreen is header tank-splits around filler neck-got fed up changing mine -now put 2 part epoxy around neck of tank--engine stays at 90 not lower and not water loss nor misting inside inside--simple :y :y

...-got fed up changing mine -now ....

??? ??? ??? How many times have you changed it & where have you got the replacements from? I only ever replaced mine once (from Vauxhall) in 10 yrs but that was only because I wanted a nice shiny new white/translucent header tank  :y  :y :y

And this is the guide I use. Apologies that you have to look at Darth Loo Knee, and hence listen to Rick Astley in the videos ;D
