I test drove a Vauxhall Omega 2.2 CD petrol 2003 last night but there are a couple of problems I am worried about.
There is a lot of oil around the dif. Is this common and should I worry too much about it? There is no wining from it.
The brake pedal travel is very long before the brakes engage and the car stops. If I put my foot down hard the car stops fine but the amount of brake travel is a big worry. The front and rear discs are worn and have a fairly large lip around the outer edge. Would the wear cause this problem? What could be the problem?
There is also a roughness through the clutch pedal when pulling away in first all other gears are smooth. Is this normal for this car at this age?
The car is not in the best of conditions but with a bit of TLC will come up looking not to bad at all for the price. He wants £250 for the car but I don't know weather the car is worth spending a load of money on it if the faults above is costly. It will need 4 new tires soon as well well. It is being used daily.

I am probably not the best person to answer this ::),but if you can get it for £200 or less (depends what tickets it's got on it?).....it's got to be worth the punt, why not spend £25 and stick it in for MOT and see what comes up?
I did this with mine (same car, manual) and it went through after standing for 18 months with a couple of advisories.
Brake parts etc are not that expensive,so to me it's worth spending a couple of hundred on it,and you will have a nice comfortable car.The worst that can happen is that you break it and you will get your pennies back on the engine etc.......give it a shot......you have some good buddies on here that will always help and advise.......welcome to OOF. :y

Mid-range tyres around £60 per corner plus fitting. Front disc/pad set (use genuine only) around £100 on TC (trade club). Rear discs/pads, any decent motor factor. Rear shoes if needed, again, motor factors. Rear diff oil seal, unless it`s really bad can be left until a later date. Omega manual box is not the best for smoothness.

I'll give it a go. Will be picking it up at the weeked. :)
Do you think replacing the pads and discs will sort out the very long brake pedal travel?
Why only use genuine brake pads on the front?

Omega pedal has a longer travel than most, (app. halfway to floor). A fluid change could be of benefit

Hi Rob......when you say genuine for front discs etc,do you mean VX???.....as I was going to get the Pagid ones from EuroCar Parts??
-
Vauxhall sell front discs and pads as a set, usually the same price or less than buying pattern ones from a motor factors :y

The travel is about 2/3's to 3/4's to the floor. Is this still considered acceptable and would changing the pads and disc's fix this?
-
Cheers Al.......the travel on mine is about the same, maybe not as much.....passed MOT....I have found that most of the 2.2CD have the same and when I was driving Carlton's they were the same, like they said, maybe a fluid change and do the discs etc will help,if you are not used to driving the Omega you will find the pedals strange and softer to start with, but they are good car's .....looked after.

Thanks for all your replies. One last question for now. Is there a good diy/tuts anywhere for doing the Cambelt and are there any recommended makes that I should buy and fit? This will have to be my first job.

Gates or Contitech. Must change the waterpump as well due to it being cambelt driven

Is it worth the extra money to buy the Gates or Contitech belt over the standard belt. I was told that the tensioner and rollers would fail way before the belt anyway. What do you think?
Thanks

Yep. Buy it as a kit http://www.buypartsby.co.uk/buy/VAUXHALL/OMEGA/2.2/2003/__/54/engine/belts-tensioners/timing-belt-kits/

After I pick the car up at the weekend I will order the kit and the pump from there. Does the pump come with a gasket?
Would you advise using gasket sealant as well and is there a special type of sealent that you would recommend?
Do you know of any videos or tutorials that I could follow to do the cambelt?
I was told to tipex the belt and the shaft cogs and then tipex the new belt and make sure to count the teeth to make sure they matched and then just line the new belt with the markings on the cogs and fit. Will this work ok or is there a proper better way to do this? I don't want to damage the engine.
Thanks
