Mates pug 406 2.0 HDi 110 on an 03 plate owned from new!
Starts when it feels like it. Other times won't even try and start
Sometimes runs ten miles, cuts out and won't restart
I've not looked at it yet so no idea re codes
He had a garage look at it who changed the in tank lift pump with no change
Any ideas? :y

Faulty crankshaft or cam sensor,or immobiliser fault with the key,see if he has a spare key and try that.
-
Pressure sensor on the high pressure pump can cause that problem,I bought my 406 with pretty much those symptoms and the pressure switch fixed it,read the codes and see what's showing.

New fuel filter and bleed fuel system to injectors? :-\
-
I would hazard a guess at the diesel filter being full of water ... That can have very strange effects on a diesel engine as they don't run on water very well, Over time the diesel filter can accumulate water from what I can only guess is already in the fuel for some reason :-\
Allot of newer cars have a drain on the bottom of the filter to remove any water that may be sitting in there. Polo 6n 19d, shiteron bx, zx and xantia have this on the later models to name but a few

I was thinking possibly the high pressure pump failing?
From memory, I don't believe these are coded to the engine on the hdi, anyone know for sure?

The Hdi hp pump isn't coded to the ecu, live readings will give you an idea of pressure in system,a buggered injector with too much leak back will cause similar symptoms :y
