Just in the process of getting plates made for the Jag with my private no on it.
I`m having diffculties getting a plate made at a resonable cost Some want £45!! ( the x type number plate on the rear is a funny shape like Rover 75)
Most places seem to insist that they have their details printed on the plate - i DONT want this. However i`ve copied and past the following from one seller...
"They also display our supplier I'D, Postcode and the BSAU14d Standard in small writing at the bottom, meaning they will pass the new MOT rules, unlike others on eBay.
So anyone advise is this now necessary or just advertising bull :-/
ps anyone know of a good & cheap online plate maker that stock odd shaped plates ?

Try this Markie
What's the British Standard for number plates?
The British Standard sets out the physical characteristics of the number plate. This includes visibility, strength and reflectivity.
The British Standard also requires each number plate to be permanently and legibly marked with the following information:
The British Standard number (currently BS AU 145d)
The name, trademark or other means of identification of the manufacturer or component supplier (The company that made the plate)
Name and postcode of the supplying outlet.
Looks like there right :(

Rules are different for suppliers in Scotland and ireland (Apparently)

wanted just a simple look with nothing on the plate...especially not some companies advertising :'(
The law is an a$$

That loophole has been closed up Bud - when i got my documents in the DVLA office today i was given an authenticity certificate enabling me to get plates made up at a garage etc. Yeah right £65 quid !!
The DVLA advisor commented it " used to be only England and wales that needed it but also covers Scotland now"

I get mine off Ebay, there advertised as show plates and not road legal to cover the supplier :y

Thats the ones ready for the OOF meets. :y :y

I worked at Halfords when the laws changed and we had to put it on the bottom - you would never see it if you were following the car, very discrete.
However, when making my own plates I managed to spill some white spirit on the backing sheet before it was applied to the acrylic... unfortunately all the "mandatory information" seemed to get washed off ;)
Now I have nice clean looking but non legal plates (supposedly)
Disclaimer: I don't drive said vehicle on the road :y

Young lady got picked up for this ( amongst other plate infringements )on Roadwars --- the fact that she was in a bright pink Smart car was criminal enough !!!!!
Her plate was M 700 SXY ... in front of the M was a playboy bunny on a dark background ( forming a large I) ( Illegal graphics).
The fixing screw was placed at the top of the 7 making it a "T" ( illegal placing of fixing screws)
Illegal font
Illegal size
No manufacturers details
and a couple of other plate infringments -- 7 illegals out of a possible 8 apparently !

Mine are showplates - standard font and only advertising is for here

At the moment vosa have suspended a lot of the requirments on plates. At present we cant fail them for not having the suppliers name or postcode or bsau mark or flags etc. May not be legal but we cant fail them on them bits..

Exactly as Lee says .. it is illegal to have "wrong" number plates .. but you won't fail an MOT for them .... stupid or what !!

There is a legal way round this:
A supplier here in Bedford will make your plates up and will, to ensure they are legal, have their name and post-code added at the correct size. The catch, or loophole, is that these details are added in such a similar colour to the rest of the number plate you need to be within 2 feet and looking carefully to see them.
I can send you their details if you like or, if you wanted me to, I could have these made up for you and sent to you in the post fairly easily.
I have this on mine: It looks like the writing is there, but it says something other than it should ;). As it appears to be making every effort to be as legal, and EU legal at that, I have never had any problems and have friends who are policemen who say that someone would have to be being incredibly anal to bother.

It might be "legal" to have them MADE like that .. but it illegal to use them on the public highway. These are "show" plates only ...
To be legal plates must conform to the British Standard..

This one you have to buy .. :(

Unlike the VRN, there is no legal stipulation on what colour the writing has to be or how visible it is for the manufacturers name and postcode, only that it must not exceed a certain size.
EDIT: I have just confirmed this. It is not a stipulation as to what colour or font the plate makers logo needs to be.
Therefore plates made like this are legitimately and securely sold for "Road use" and ARE NOT illegal.
Borders are legal too.
As my plates were made and fitted when the car was 1st registered in June 201 which is before the cut off date of 01/09/2001 then my plates are legal too. :y
I may be wrong (it wouldn't be the 1st time), so if you can show me the part of any BS (British Standard and not the other BS) that states anything to stipulate the font or colour of this manufacturers logo please and I will happily go back to the person who makes these plates as road legal and correct them.

TBH why would they bother - the MOT is for safety items, not BS on plates

.. because they're worried the Police state won't know your every move with plates their ANPR can't read. >:(
Think yourself lucky there aren't any RFID tags in them yet. Or are there? :o

I really cant understand all the fuss about the supplier of the plate, unless that is for them to source who is making illegal plates, and if that is the case they will only put false details on.
I would have thought the whole point was having the legal height and alignment of the reg details with out clutter arround the number.

I look upon petty regulations like this as a licence to break them, I look for petty rules to break and petty other things to ignore.
We all need to do it to stop the rampant control freakery of the government
