Title: 2.2 16v petrol non starter ?
Post by: PDK1953 on 02 April 2014, 00:56:03
Help and suggestions of likely cause please .............. car was running perfectly yesterday, this morning turned ignition key and as always it fired up immediately but it only ran for about 2 seconds then cut out. It has done this 2 or 3 times before and just by chance I discovered that by just turning key again it wouldn't start, but turning off completely, removing key from ignition switch, then re-inserting key and turning again it would start ??? No idea why ??? However, this morning even that trick is not working ........... engine is turning over, petrol supply is there, but not a flicker of any attempt to fire up  :-[??? looks like whatever was playing up before has finally died !
Any suggestions of where to start looking ?

Would suggest camshaft sensor first followed by possibly crank sensor! I have been having trouble with my camshaft sensor recently (also a 2.2 16v petrol) so decided to get a replacement pattern sensor! DON'T DO IT! Save yourself the hassle and get a genuine sensor from Vx main dealer (about £72 + vat if not buying at TC cost). Some of the camshaft sensors I have tried don't allow me to start the car (I get fuel and so on but doesn't start) ... If I unplug the the camshaft sensor altogether it also refuses to start ... It's a common issue with the 2.2 petrol's I believe
*also note that some pattern sensors put the gearbox fault light on also and result in very lumpy running in my own experience*
Hope that helps some in getting it started again  :y

Being an estate, ensure that there's at least a quarter tank of fuel and that the car is reasonably level as they get quite fussy parked on a slope with low fuel. If the light is on put at least 10 litres in and try again :y

If that is all fine, then crank sensor is the likely culprit :y Vauxhall only, and from a dealer over the counter, not Ebay... ignore at your expense :-\

Blocked filter and failing fuel pump are the other possibilities

I second that  ;D

Thanks guys,  :y have also had the gearbox fault message come up a few times recently but not linked the two ... had a huge problem with that gearbox message a few years ago, took months to resolve, during that process the cambelt sensor was changed but was purchased from an Ebay Vauxhall specialist dealer as a genuine VX part ? perhaps it wasn't ?  :'((packaging looked genuine!  :-\)

PS ; just for info the gearbox fault message turned out to be nothing to do with gearbox ..... the problem was solved by changing the throttle body ? Apparently the speed sensor didn't match the throttle position sensor so the onboard displayed there was a problem with gearbox.

will go to local VX dealer and get myself a new sensor.

Yeah usual case is, Cam sensor fails, Gearbox gets the arse on and intermittently does strange things (including putting the light on), car gets difficult to start and the end result is either the camshaft sensor and/or crank sensor stop working all together
