Title: Air con overhaul
Post by: joshwyatt on 02 April 2014, 21:37:36
Both of my Omega's have U/S air con, and today I've finally decided to sort that!

It's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string, but what are the weak points?

For example, washers on the compressor, worthwhile just replacing condensor and drier/receiver as they're not overly expensive?

I'll take a trip to kwikfit, but suspect they'll gas it and tell me it's fine  ::)

If the condensers appear intact then swap out the valves and get them regassed :y

If condensers are shot, ie bits hanging off the bottom edge, change them too...

Your black one has had a new valve fitted to the rear fill point (by the oil filler), and I have a spare valve for the front one. So just need one of each for the white one :y

Just to add, the system needs filling in order to test it, as the compressor won't run with no gas, so I woukd swap the valves, then get kwikfit or whoever to regas them and go from there :y

condensors are a weak point due to being right at the front where they get all the sh1te & salt thrown up from the road surface. Then compressors I would say. I also had a leak on one of the fill points (the one Grrr has just been posting about, right at the front of the engine bay) and one of the pressure switches.

Easiest things to replace first are the hp and lp valves, these are prone to leak and cost pence, a new compressor will cost about £150 a condenser about £90, if the evaporator is gone then that's a dash out job. Also check the fuses. :)
there's also a valve hidden behind the glove box, and the pressure sensing valve at the front they cost £55,(its got a switch in)

The weak points on Omegas are condenser, valves, compressor and the pipe that runs up the chassis leg to baukhead.
