Title: coolent loss places to look
Post by: elitedave on 05 April 2014, 01:30:45
ok bit long not long ago my 3l elite min face lift ago my aux belt tentioner decided to jam and take betd out  up ended up needing a new a radiator as well it did get very hot blew on duel carage way at 110 lepton

I was paranoid about head and engine but stuck a mot tester prob i there and was neg so seemed head was fine
done a good few 1000 miles since

but still cant get the dam thing water tight and forever filling header tank once every say 300 mile its losing a head tank full

but has new radiator it aint the hbv that's dry as a bone and been done its not the matrix not long put one after it blew
also the coolant hose to the coolant bridge between heads i did bodged it a bit with some pipe from motor factors rather than get shaped hose
so it is possible its that but im a bit worried

car just failed on rot but could be welded for a few hundred and also failed on fooked handbrake  no movement probably just seized

car is on 114 thousand ad in good nick apart from back arched and bumper could do with a respray its mint and i dont really want to part with it
but the rub is im bit worried about coolant leack and engine and where to look for coolant leak

ie hoping its bodged coolant bridge hose or oil cooler plate

other tjhan that thinking of possible leak location its got me think maybe that back pipe at back of enging thats hard to get at and i dont know how to do that or a core plug i cant do

anything im missing ?

ideas of where too look

one other thik re manase inn oil filler neck syndrome i don't know if my imagination  but there seems to be more in there of late and i do drive luton to essex and back twice
a week so it always getting a good run

Places I've seen leaks:

HBV or associated pipework
Thermostat seals
Oil cooler plate
Coolant Bridge
Waterpump seal
Coolant bottle
Rad
HG, rear of passenger bank, esp on 1998 3.0l

Often, easiest way to find it is to remove plenum and intakes, pressure the system to about 8psi with a coolant cap with a tyre valve in, and visually inspect

I have replaced my radiator which I found had a small leak but only when under pressure. Have a close look under the car after it is warmed up.
