Title: Well I've gone & done it - Theory booked for Motorbike
Post by: Crazycarzowner on 07 April 2014, 20:16:59
Been threatening to do it for a while now, so I've booked the test to start. Always wanted to ride a bike but never gone through with it. Then its CBT & Direct access.  :o :o :o

Enjoy, I did it back in 2009. Enjoyed every minute of learning, bar the U turns perhaps  ::)

Quickly moved onto the GS & done some good tours on it  :)

I got in just before they changed the test. I did the traditional theory + road test, everyone was very unhappy at the new setup. Apparently numbers of people applying went down vastly  :-\

To be honest I've never set foot on a motorbike albeit a twist & go when I was a kid, realy know diddly squat about em but I'd love to learn.

IF, if I do pass direct access I may be questioning you on what to look for when buying & which are the best for my circumstances  ;)

Same here.

My test cost me £12, took 20 minutes and half a dozen highway code questions (applied for the test 2 months and 2 weeks before I turned 17 to beat what was the first of the 2 part test that was introduced on March 29, 1982).
Took the test in the morning on a Honda CB 100N, and by the afternoon I was on a Suzi GSX 750ET  :) :)

What sort of ride are you after..
Plastic bullet, Cruiser, Streetfighter, Moto X, ? ? ?

This was my first bike, it's what I passed my DAS on. Nice little thing (Yamaha MT-03)

It was indeed, I posted the application form on March 20th to ensure it got to the (then called) DVLC in time for the deadline.
If I had failed, I would have been doing the 2 part test which taught you nothing more than how to behave like a trained seal and would have resulted in gravel rash as one of the stopping tests was proven to be impossible to perform even for respected stunt riders.

I did the 2 parter in 1986.  :)

The Part 1 instructor was called 'Pirate' and he had 1 leg and 1 eye and rode a battered Honda CX500 and when he pulled up he sorted of twisted and lent so the bike fell on his good leg side!  :o  :D

He used to squint at us and say in his broad Devon " If yee do what I tell ee, yull paaaas! If you don't, you won't! "  ;D ;D ;D

I sneaked through a month before the two part malarky started.  I take my hat off to anyone that gets their full license these days.  Go for it !!  :y

Officialdom does not like motorbikes and they do all they can to discourage people from riding them, but WE know that there is nothing like them for fun - except when it rains!
now, you rotten lot, you have made me want to get back on two wheels again - I have a basket-case Sunbeam S8 in pieces buried in my garage......

Passed mine in 1976 on a Suzuki TS125  :-[ cost £5 and 20 minutes of riding around a block and passing the examiner.  ::) 8) Back then you could ride any bike on a learner licence as long as it had a sidecar  :y

I passed MY test with a sidecar machine, Kevin, back in 1966 on a Panther 120 - a 650 cc single cylinder sloper.

And in & around Gosport & Fareham in the very early 80s, there was a Z1300 & sidecar on L plates  :o :y :y

It was one of those very short lived 'side winder' sidecars ie they just paid lip service to being a sidecar in that it had a wheel, but it hinged to allow you to lean either way.  ;)

I remember those - a way of getting round the engine capacity restrictions for learners. And no fears of the chair lifting on left-handers as mine did on my first ride out!
Nobody told me it was likely to happen.......

"Blimey"! Have no idea what you are talking about ??? Part 1 Part 2 etc etc. A few months ago I found my buff coloured provisional licence. Passed my test in August 1964. Straight off to Comerfords in Thames Ditton to collect my new Aerial Arrow Golden Sports, to sample that amazing freedom and 70 + mph... 'WoW'!! Enjoy the biking experience Jason, but watch out for 'Mr. Policeman'..  ;) ;D ;D

I remember those a friend of mine had one fitted to a Suzuki GT750 on L plates  ;D

Before the two part test. Buy bike, learn to ride it, fast and dangerous, eventually those that survived were fast and safe, book test, drive around a course, which the examiner strolled around and at some point raised his arm, which was emergency stop time, back to the centre, asked a few highway code questions and get your pass certificate.  :) :) :y :y :y

Came off a couple of times as I was learning to ride, had a few near misses over the years, but touch wood, never had an accident. :y :y :y

I think it would be embarrassing if you had failed that ;D

Well done though :y, good luck with next bit

The CBT is quite good fun, though may seem difficult at the time, esp the slow speed stuff around cones whilst maintaining complete control. It gets easier with practice though :y

I failed my bike test first time, put my foot down on the U-turn  :-[, so maybe the slow speed stuff if just something I simply struggled with  :-\

I certainly wouldn't have been able to go into work on Monday if I'd failed.  ;D ;D ;D Not blowing me own trumpet but I didn't get any wrong on the multiple guess  :P :P :P The hazzard perception, I think I over egged it a bit due to my previous training  ::) and had an itchy trigger finger on the mouse, but did very well in that too!

I've only seen the hazard perception test bit when my kids were doing their lessons ........ surely everything about driving, especially on today's crowded roads, is a potential hazard  :-\ IMHO a complete waste of time & effort dreamt up by someone in an office

Passed mine on an air cooled RD 250  ::) Had to do the 2 part test , first bit at an HGV centre .. Examiner said i did well to not put a foot down on the slalom test with a bike with hardly any steering lock  ;D

Good luck  :y
