Title: Life span of motor oil
Post by: BobCat on 08 April 2014, 18:44:29
Hello

Not been on for a few years (Sorry) as the cars been laid up however I'm considering getting road worthy again either to keep or sell on.

My question relates to Motor oil I have 16 Litres of GM Semi-synthetic 10w/40 in the shed bought with a TC probably 5+ years ago. Would this still be ok to use or should I get rid and buy new?

Any help greatly appreciated.
Regards
B

It'll be OK ..... real oil is only a few million years old, so your semi-skimmed won't mind sitting there for another 5  :y  :y

I'm not a chemist, but as I understand it, the base of oil never deteriorates - as Andy said, it is THAT old - but in service it absorbs pollutants and water until it can absorb no more or turns abrasive, and also the additives die out. Therefore if your stored oil has never been in service, none of the above will take place.....

I don't think petrol is so forgiving of long storage, though?
