Sister in law and son have been visiting us from Truro using First Great Western to Reading.
On way up from Truro despite having reserved seats the seat numbers they had were occupied by people who also had reservations for same seats - there were other spaces so it got sorted.
On way back tonight 7.33pm from Reading to Truro it was 30 mins late and heaving. Same thing again with duplicated seat reservations but this time no other seats.
Mrs has just been on to FGW customer services but not a lot to be done until sister in law gets hold of guard which ain't going to happen for a while.
Does this nonsense happen a lot on FGW?

Sorry to hear about this unfortunate situation.
I really can't comment here, as I don't work for FGW - they simply cross our patch.
Best advice is to pursue the issue via their Customer Services people and take it from there. Maybe of little relevance, but FGW's guards engaged on Inter City duties are titled 'Train Managers'
Good luck to your sister-in-law with this one, and keep us up to speed on progress ;)

What guard said last night was that transactions made at same time can give duplicate numbers....I can imagine that in our business!! SIL bought tickets from Truro station, one of passengers with duplicate had bought on line and one had bought at Paddington.
What a load of tosh....
Thanks for replying Seth sorry I thought you were with FGW.
Will follow up with customer services. Train arrived one hour late as well. She got a seat at Newbury.

Speaking of trains, I'm currently on a CrossCountry service to Banbury. It s only 4 coaches long, I was lucky to get a seat. I travelled same route in the late 90's. They had 6 to 8 coaches then!
