It will be the first time anyone from the family has been to his grave.

apparently my mums grandad was killed in the 1st world war, died on the front line and was buried in france. nice to know.
-
My great grandad fell in the Somme, been out there many times to see his corner of England.
-
Couple of great uncles there -- one in Trefcon from WW1 and one made it back to Wiltshire and died there of his injuries ( re-patriated from Colditz WW2)
-
One of my uncle's, Wally Edwards of the East Kent Machine Gun Corp was lost in the mud, during the Third Battle of Ypres, on 30th September 1917, and I found his name on tablet 58 at the Menin Gate.
After spending a lot of time with my Great Aunt, Wally's sister, throughout my childhood and into my thirties when she died at 95 and watching her still mourn over his death whilst looking at his photograph in military uniform, it was a highly emotional moment when I finally tracked down his name at Ypres. :'( :'(
I will never forget him. :(

What a great debt we all owe to the brave and selfless souls whom gave that we might sleep safely and awake in freedom each day.

Martin, is there a site like this one to see what my Grandad did in WW2? he didn't die there though..

If you know who he served with you can put in a request to their records office. You will have to find out who they have been amalgamated to in all the defense reviews since then. I managed to get the records of my grandfathers one served in Burma and the other was mentioned in Dispatches while in the REME. Got their entire military record, very cool!
