Title: Z20R / Z20C differences (solid black paint)
Post by: humbucker on 14 April 2014, 09:33:08
My MV6's paint code is Z20C (solid black). There is also the more popular Z20R floating about. The paint code on the VIN plate of both is 90U afaik (can anyone with a Z20R car confirm this?). Does anyone know the difference between Z20C and Z20R? Must be pretty subtle?

I was under the impression that Z20R was the metallic black, whereas Z20C is solid? Z20R = Black Sapphire, something like that?

Ok, answering my own question here (for the benefit of those who might stumble upon this thread at a later date):

Z20C / 90U Black II (solid black)
Z20R / 2HU Black Sapphire (metallic black)

Not sure if this helps or confusses it further.

My 2003 Elite has a VIN plate code of ..Z 20R..and log book states as Sapphire Black.
Old service details from issuing dealer show code as ..Black Sapphire and 2 HU

personally I wouldnt trust the paint code on the car :-\

why ? because there are a variety of versions for the same code on the paint prep machines..

for example my cars color code is Z282.. and if you check the glassurit prep machine there are around 40 variants.. and besides even if you find the correct variant still the color wont match because of red component..  so you have to apply your paint on a test card with the number of layers your painter will apply (by his hand) and with laquer .. and later check the final color after 24 hours under sun..

and to my surprise the final car (junk) I painted was prepped with 3 different codes at least ;D

and if you want to be exactly sure of your paint color tone, apply on a bigger panel and wait 6 months.. during this time the color continues to darken :(

I had some minor damage so I temporarily stuck a Z20R wing on my Z20C  MV6  FL as I could not  find a Z20C one anywhere .

The metallic difference is very subtle but shows up more in sunlight . You have to get right up close to notice any difference even then.

Now replaced with the correct Z20C  . . . but was good practice to change the wing over  ;D ;D

Spare Z20R n/s wing in the shed if anyone needs one  ;)
