For the Love of Cars on C4 now if you like Escort Mexico 1972
-
I need to get mine sorted. :'(
-
Would much prefer the twin cam - like sh1t off a shovel compared to the Mexico ;)
-
Mine has a 1600 xflow bored out to 1700 and is quicker than the mexico :y
-
I watched it but .......... Mmmm , not sure :-\
Not enough on the actual restoration of the car which was disappointing .
Too much hyperbole re "Boy Racers " which would have more than a few owners of pristine modified MK 1 escorts across here spitting feathers .
I await the Landrover episode to see if it improves.

Yes it was a shame they didn't show more but I think it was done by several people and not just the mechanic shown like other programs of this type. >:(
-
My first new car in August 1973 was an Escort Mexico monza blue with white flash, a friend of mine worked for Ford back then, with discount cost me £1030.00 on the road..wish I had it now traded it in for a Granada 3.0 Ghia.
-
Not impressed with that programme :(

Agreed.
These are worth megabucks today.
I recently saw one advertised for £65,000........ :D :D
Crazy money for a MK1 Escort.

Mate of mine had one in the early '70s - we had to replace a couple of valves, and then it flew. Very pokey car at the time.

If memory serves The 'Twin Cam' used the same engine as the Lotus Cortina but in a significantly lighter body. :y :y

I always warmed to the MK2 more than the MK1.
I'm still partial to the 1600E. :y

There is a Mk2 Savage for sale in a Classic specialist in Ripon, £25k iirc, would be my first purchase after my lottery win, they also have a Mini Cooper, my 2nd purchase...... :D :D :y

Agreed....an engine with bottom end torque. Unlike the later 2.8 litre jobbie. :-\

Superior to what?
A boat anchor? Crawling on your hands and knees across broken glass? Mopeds?

Is it? Really? Neither has much to recommend it; it's more a case of deciding which set of 'characteristics' is the least bad.
An Essex weighs a ton, has bottom end torque - which is a polite way of saying it's a wheezy, asthmatic boat anchor - a valve train that's comically weak, is crap on fuel and is expensive to rebuild.
A Cologne weighs a ton, revs well - which is polite way of saying it's a gutless boat anchor - a valve train that's comically weak, is crap on fuel and expensive to rebuild.
The best thing you can do with either is to reunite them with their chain, and put them back into their natural environment under a boat.
I must add that I do like the 12v 2.9 for a road car, and the Cosworth is good when attached to a manual gearbox.
-
I'm wondering how many cars have used the 'Essex' lump?.
Now let me see.
Ford Zodiac
Ford Capri
Ford Cortina Savage
TVR 3000M
Gilbern Invader
AC 3000 ME
.....any more?

Scimitar. Where they managed to add overheating to its attributes.

It's only legendary because any competitors were even worse. BMCs C-series for instance.

At least the could have decent head work done to them and safely turbo'd unlike the omega V6 :-X neither had timing BELTS that had to be changed every 40,000 miles.
-
They both have nylon timing gears which can quite easily break every 40k miles. Not to mention the utterly ineffective 'self-locking' rocker arm bolts that loosen if you use the engine hard.
I'm not a fan of either engine.

Never had a problem with mine and I deffinately drove it hard. :-X

Don't forget the bloody useless Allen key drive for the oil pump on the essex lump which used to fail quite regularly :-X

I thought so too, have not seen this program before but seemed quite good

I thought it was pretty poor, the quality of his welding on the chassis was not up to scratch either!

I have seen pigeons do a better job ;D but it did look nice at the end though :y although they could show more of the renovation it is nice to see the history of the vehicle they are doing. :y

Ah the Stag :-* Those uprated radiators were built for a reason , to stop overheating so what they on about ::) :(

They were suggesting that the cooling system was OK but that the 1970's BL workforce wasn't. ::) ::) ::)
Four words......Quality control and BL. ::) ::) ;)

Sabotage :-\ Maybe they werent aloud enough fag breaks :(

I missed the LR programme last week but watched last nights episode.
They pursued the much maligned stag's shortcomings with verve at every opportunity from condemning the condition of the car as bought ( why buy it then ?) through to a peculiar road trip with a constantly unfunny Gene and a lifelong unfunny and weird Alexie Sayle who hadn't even owned a Stag . They lambasted the car for breaking down again in London and when informed that it was a mere battery they , in their petrolhead wisdom, elected to continue to Paris without changing such a simple component . When in France he called his mate to say that the Stag was true to form and he would be getting the train back , what a load of Shtie .
Cursed the engine when on test the viscous coupling failed , was it new ? , and then informed the world that in fact that there NEVER was anything wrong with the engine cooling design and that the fault lay at the door of production for not bleeding the cooling system correctly in the first place . Really !
I found it very irritating ...........again.
-
There does not seem any passion for the cars at all >:(
I mean that so called mechanic ! Ham fisted and no patience !!
Very annoying .

Mind, the finished result looked nice, but no suggestion of money spent.............. ::) ::)

Soo, some angry Stag owners in here, then? ;D
I quite enjoyed it - take it as it's meant to be taken I think, light hearted. If you want to watch a proper beardy restoration programme where they cover every detail then, er, you're out of luck because things like that would have a viewership of about 4 ;)
And, of course, like all TV, I'm sure all of the "Oh dear it's broken down" and "I can't get this bolt off" parts are scripted - just like Car S.O.S. and Top Gear..
I quite like that they don't stick to a ridiculous timescale (of, say, there weeks per Car SOS) or budget, because nobody ever believes it's possible to restore a classic from a rusty shell in three weeks and with just £3.50 and a packet of donuts, do they? Or maybe they do and that's why there's no shortage of rusting shells sitting in lockups.. ;D
Incidentally I think I'd rather own a GT6 .. Their £7-15k price tag doesn't seem outlandish, either, and they're a damn sight better looking!

Must admit the V8 did sound nice.. even if it is only a tiddler

Yeah great car but fraid id never get in or out of it ;D
Dont like the grumpy old presenter on the show either , he dont seem to have much knowledge of any car and comes across as very un interested ::) Quite a big Stag club aint it :D tsoc :-\

You and me both, most likely! A bit like looking at the original Lotus Elans; I was amazed at how tiny and low down they are, even compared to a modern Elise. I reckon you'd only get me in with the aid of a very big shoe horn and out again with a tin opener!
-
Forget which show it was last night but the were restoring a morris minor , always liked those ..they did a great body off resto :y Remember my grandad driving one and hearing it pop and backfire down the road ;D Becoming collectable now :-X

The sound of this engine, especially in 3 litre form, is enough to give any red-blooded man a semi. :-* :-* :y

Enjoyed this week's Triumph Stag themed show (watched it last night). The production qualities are much better than the nearest rival/inspiration, 'Wheeler Dealers', and this series certainly provides more of an interesting historical overview regarding each of the cars that get restored, but I do find it irritating that there's so much playing up for the cameras.
Alexei Sayle was great fun though, hehe.

Performance Minis on now - well if it would stream it would be on now............. :o

Enjoyed that, a proper car!.................... :y :y :y
