Hi all,
As I only have 1 does a spare have to be the same separate key and fob or are the later 2 button keys compatible with the locks/alarm?
Cheers Al
-
If its preface, as in pre 98, then fairly sure there not the same.
-
It's a 97 pre-facelift. Was hoping they were the same frequency or whatever as the housings on eBay are cheap and then all I would need is a new blade cut. If it isn't compatible then it looks like I would need a new key and a fob.
Never mind, was trying to keep costs down if possible.
Cheers

IIRC those car that have a separate fob & key use an infra red fob (a dark red dome on the interior sun roof trim), later cars with a combined fob/key use radio frequency. ie completely different from each other
-
I don't think there is a sensor on the sunroof trim, I am sure it works without line of sight. I will have to check tomorrow, only had the car 11 years so is time I learnt my way around it but I am sure the only sensor is the cc one on the dash.
-
As far as I have found so far the later cars had 2 different types of key and I was hoping one was the same frequency as mine.
-
I've got a couple here but they will need programing to your alarm
Pm me if interested
-
Still not sure if yours are the IR or RF types, but there are at least 3 different types of RF keyfob for the later cars before you consider variations in the number of buttons for saloon / estates, and they are completely incompatible with each other. I'd be very careful about matching them with your existing fob before buying, TBH.
Don't just go on the markings on the fob, take it apart and photograph the PCB inside to verify what type you have.
-
Here is a picture of the inside of the fob, but I get the feeling the cheap option isn't going to work and I will end up having to buy a new key also. Can any old chip be programmed or does it need to be from the same sort of key also.

The 1996/1997 separate fobs are compatible with the 2 button Megamos (only) ones.
Will obviously need programming to car. Fortunately, you're near Kevin Wood :)
-
Cheers TB,
So either a new key and fob same as the one I have or one like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Vauxhall-Opel-2-button-remote-key-fob-megamos-M-AM-433-92MHz-70505002009-TESTED-/251285011536?pt=UK_Car_Accessories_Safety_Security&hash=item3a81c0fc50
Depends what is cheapest but in good condition but I like the idea of getting rid of the extra fob of possible.
I know Kevin is local but I have software to cover all cars/systems, just need to find the car pass :-\

If using the cheap, illegal nasty clone version available from online auction sites, just be aware that it has a nasty habit of destroying alarm ECUs... ...you may also struggle with immobilisers and transponders.
If using decent kit, should be straightforward :)

Key or software? Diagnostic was from Amazon and is PC based and worked fine on the couple of keys and airbag modules I have programmed.
Would a second hand key like in the link be worthwhile or would new be best, was thinking new would be to much to justify.

How do I identify a megamos key please? Is it an age thing, are they only from mini facelift only our is there a code on them?

From Amazon (sold by Amazon sarl), or Amazon Marketplace (listed and paid via Amazon's website, but sold by another company)?
The cheaper PC based diagnostics frequently cause issues with ECUs, esp alarm ECUs (and NCDC stereos, but that's another matter!). The immobiliser programming frequently destroys the transponder.
Hence my caution.
