what are, CD,, CDX,, MV6 Abbreviated for, if any, or are they just simply models??

what are, CD,, CDX,, MV6 Abbreviated for, if any, or are they just simply models??

As I understand it CD = Civil Diplomate
CDX = Civil Diplomate extra
MV = Motorsport V6 engine (?)
plus L = Luxury
GL = Grand Luxury
GLS = Grand Luxury Sport
SRi = Sports Racer injection
GT = Grand Tourer
Ghia = Italian Design House Standard
They all indicate interior/ exterior trim levels, plus sometimes a hint / small reference to the engine i.e. GT or Sri usually indicated a car designed around a 'racing' engine. 'Lotus' of course is the name of the comapany who designed/built the engine.

I would also add that before the mid-sixties cars were usually just a 'basic' model, with the engine size the crucial badge indicator i.e. Wolsley or Austin 1100, Cortina 1.6, etc. Then in came the 'L' badges, which meant you got a heater and maybe a radio, with steel wheels with fancy nut covers....etc!
Nowadays who has a 'basic' car in terms meant in the 1950s/60s? Cars now are Grand Luxury Extra compared to those; in fact they are like Rolls Royces compared to those old models! Just look at an old 'Baby Austin', Austin Healley, or Model T Ford!

GL (for Grand Lux)
Ghia (the name of a former Italian coachbuilder/design studio owned by Ford)
In the mid-80s they had a specifications war against Vauxhall.(whose trim levels were L, GL and GLS) for fleet sales, and introduced a new trim level between L and GL which on the Escort and Sierra was basically an L with a red stripe and a sunroof - they called this an "LX" (probably L eXtra).
The LX trim level quickly became the most popular, and is still used now, even though the "base", "L" and "GL" tags have disappeared.

so therefore the basic spec meega is a grand luxury sport?

GLS = Grand Luxery Sport yes, and compared to the 'basic' level trims of say the Carlton's and early Omega's they ARE luxury and sporty!

You are right Skruntie, although it started at the end of the 1970s it certainly became a battle in the 1980s. Not just at that level either! Some of us with company cars at the time always kicked up a fuss about what level of trim their replacement car would be, and heaven help the Property Director if somebody got a 'L' or 'GL' if no one else at that 'rank' had one!! Talk about jealosy (amoungst the men of course!! ;D ;D) I just was happy to have a nice brand new car every 18 months to 2 years! ;)
