Title: Corsa stuck!!

My friend is stuck with her corsa. It's an older one, a 1.4 of the 1993 era.

It appears her rear brakes are stuck on, and it won't move! She's burning her clutch trying to pull away, so she's given up and called out the breakdown coverage.

I seem to remember this is common on corsa's. If I'm right, they have drum brakes on the rear (I can't see this model having ABS)

What does anyone think for a longer term resolution - new brake shoes, and maybe clean out the drums, or get them machined maybe? Or just sod it and replace drums too?

Maybe it's caused by a spring?

Any ideas appreciated, I'd like to help her out with it.

Drums can stick if not looked after. Strip it down, clean and service, then see whats what...

I have this problem alot with a boat trailer I have ferrous metal doesn't like salt water. the best course of action is to check first whether the hand brake is applied and if it is, are the linkages free? if its just the foot brake thats jammed if youv'e got the room to manouvre drag the car to free the brakes off ( a v6 meega will be just the job as a tow car) once their free a full strip down , clean and inspection will be required, replacing parts as required. pay particular attention to the bond between the shoe and friction
material as this joint can be prone to failure GOOD LUCK  :y
P.S if you can get at them give the drums a few good sharp taps with a hammer first this can help free them off

Drums can be a nightmare if they don't want to come off. My Cavalier coupe years ago didn't want me to take them off. In the end I had to resort to the biggest puller I could get hold of to convince it to let go of them, as they had rusted solid between the centre of the of the drum & the hub. As I wound in the puller the face of the drum was concave, when it went [size=12]BANG[/size] & I'd opened my eyes  :-[ I was sure that the drum was going to be in several pieces, fortunately it was still intact. A smear of copper grease was all it needed.

The need stripping and cleaning, the Corsa has a great rear brake setup and is VERY reliable if maintained....has she tried reversing by the way or smake the wheel (not the backs) with a hammer.
