Title: Fiesta clutch issue
Post by: omegod on 28 April 2014, 18:28:37
wifeys fiesta has thrown a wobbly with not wanting to select gears properly, you can get it in with some difficulty and it drives. This is only with the engine on as it selects fine otherwise >:( I'm not too familiar with transmissions  :-[

ANY TIPS APPRECIATED :y

Much more likely to be the clutch. It might just be the slave cylinder, but that still means removing the gearbox.
Time for a new clutch.

If it's a hydraulic clutch there may well be a leak but to find that out you'd have to take it to bits anyway as Nick says. If it's cable you may be able to get a few more miles with an adjustment, but if it's on it's way out, change it.
If you are capable of messing around with a V6, a clutch will be well within your capabilities.

Depends which model fiesta it is for cable or hydraulic clutch.if cable check the quadrant on the clutch pedal as these fail and then the clutch cant adjust automatically

It will probably be a cable not sure about the latest fiesta's but they are all cable up till the MK5 does the pedal make a clicking noise when pressed fully down if so the adjuster could be slipping they are plastic teeth on them. :y

Ah, yes, I remember these things. We had one with a nail stuck through it after it failed. Lasted for years after that. ;D

Its a hydraulic clutch on this one, no signs of a leak but doubt there would be tbh so guess it's a gearbox out to see whatever the cause is as the slave is in the bellhousing . Never done a clutch before but may well give it a go so any guidance welcome :y

If you're gonna split the bell housing, might as well fit a new clutch. The main cost of any job is labour and, as you're in there....

Common fault on the fiesta, its more often than not a cracked pressure plate

Bought the clutch kit and concentric bearing for £82 but have a nagging doubt as I have read that the master cyliders( combined brake and clutch) also fail on these. Is there any way of testing the master cylinder?

I don't want to strip it down that far to find it's not the issue  :o

Come on lads. Jon is obviously in need of advice here. Years since I did any of this, in fact, never done it on a transverse engine.

Ahh 'dangle berries' to it, it's coming apart regardless :) I will be blaming you all individually when driveshafts don't go back in etc ;D

It's rattling when the pedal goes down so def the clutch itself :y

As alreads said, the common fault is that the pressure plate cracks.

I have repaired two myself and know of countless others that suffered the same fate.

Halfway there with this. Box is out and I need to know the torque setting for the pressure plate to flywheel bolts! From what I can see it's 25 lb/ft but if anyone can check autodata or suchlike I would be most grateful !

I will put a pic of the problem I found when finished, surprised it drove at all to be honest :o

29Nm according to autodata for a 2004 1.25 fester :y

I thought it was 35Nm actualy (or sligtly less), this is close to 25ld/ft to.

Well 25 lb/ft should do it, got the box back on, now for the stupid question........if the bell housing bolts all line up and do up tight, the shaft must be sitting in the clutch mustn't it ??? I really don't want to take it off again  :o :)

If box is upgainst engine, all is good, dont forget brake fluid, and they can be a sod to bleed sometimes :y

It's not a stupid question at all mate..... I've done one clutch on an old fiesta coincidentally. Getting the bolts to line up is a pain but when you push the box on you feel it sort of hit home and everything will be ready for a few bolts.

How are you getting the gearbox up? are you he-man-ing it  :o ;D it took three of us with no jack to refit it  :-[

Jacked it up then unexpected heman moment when it slipped off  ;D , another hour in the morning should have it finished

For hydraulic clutch setups I reverse bleed them I.e. use the easibleed to force the fluid in through the bleed nipple

Wahey all done!! Thanks everyone for their wisdom, saved about £200 doing it myself. The original pressure plate had parted company with its cover, 2 out of 3 fixings had snapped !
