Title: Handbrake
Post by: omega3000 on 29 April 2014, 11:20:11
To slacken the handbrake shoes , which way does each star adjuster move to slacken .. Just asking so i can make a note before starting .

Is it the same as clockwise to tighten and anti clockwise to loosen ? Had a right game the last time i took one off but cant recall what way the adjuster adjusts  :-\

It's a faff that's for sure!  I adjusted mine yesterday and already I've had to think about it......  :-[

I think they do up clockwise if your looking towards the back of the car.  :-\

Get a gynaecologist round!!  ;D

No way of knowing, they fit either way, trial and error.

Sorry

It all depends how they have been fitted, from the factory its normaly a case of flicking the star upwards with the screwdriver to slacken and down to tighten the shoes to the drum.

Mine must be fitted differently on each side then as it was flicking up on the offside and flicking down on the nearside to tighten them up.  Or was it the other way round....?  :-\  ;D

 :(

I gave up last time i tried and had to call an old vauxhall mechanic round and he did it without even looking  >:( He said you have to feel for it  ::) :(

Looking at the guide here i think its going to be wise to spray all the fixings before i start as the cars been standing 5 months . And guessing the adjusters inside have rusted up and non functional  :-\

This bit i hope is the problem ..

only way to tell, is with a torch, see if more thread or less is showing on the adjuster  :(

I do it with a head torch on my forehead and all other lights off. Then I can see the thread and work out which way to turn the nut.
If you intend to remove the brake drum, fully slacken the handbrake adjuster first, otherwise the rust rim on the drum will snag on the shoes.

Wonder if vx have a special tool for the star screw apart from a willy nilly hit or miss screwdriver  ::) Every drum ive tried to take off has always stuck on by the lip of the drum , got a big swear box anyway and a big hammer  ::)

It's all in the wrist  ::)  ;D

I found after a few goes, once you get the 'flick' right it's ok after that.

My set of rear shoes lasted really well, around 165k  :D

Then they self destructed, damn Vauxhall and their shoddy parts  ;D ;D

 ......

The shoes on my Omega lasted 180 000 miles as did the shoes on my 24v Senator and a similar amount of mile on the 12v

As shoes only keep a stopped car from moving I can never understand how they could wear out  ???

Is that good  :-\

Cant be much wrong with mine as there's not any grinding noise , just a loose handbrake  :(

Mine were a bad batch then  :o

I rarely applied hand brake while moving, sometimes sub 5mph just to scrub them a bit by holding brake up a bit.

Just corrosion I guess, the new ones did not really have that much more material, if any. In my case they just fell off from the metal shoe bit.

Its a bad habit to just use the park and not the handbrake , im guilty of that and could be why the gubbins inside has rusted up  :(

The Senator/Omega disc/drum system provides as good a handbrake as I have ever known. It does not like being left hard on for a long period, though. Then the linings can stick to the drum, only coming free when power is applied and the linings break off the shoes, as in reply 11. Also, the ingenious 4:1 lever at the bottom of pic in reply 5 can rust solid, then the handbrake is far less effective. If parking for more than one day I leave my handbrake off and car in gear if on the level, or against a brick of on a slope.

I hope copperslip will keep any future rust at bay once the lever has been wire brushed and cleaned  :y

Taxi Al got it spot on when I adjusted my handbrake.  To adjust the shoes apart right hand side is up and left hand side is down  :y

Assumes as mentioned they were fitted correctly, but mine have not been touched (had car from new) so last people to touch them was when it was the car was built  :D

That's reassuring, I think, as it means the first time I changed my discs, I rebuilt them the right way round ;D
