Title: Oil cooler plate removal
Post by: blackviper90210 on 03 May 2014, 13:35:48
Hi all, hope your all enjoying the nice weather!!

Having a go at replacing my leaking oil cooler. Down to the cooler plate. All bolts undone, encouraged the movement of the pipes, but can't actually get the plate out from between the "V"

I take it there is a knack/technique??

Any help would be appreciated.

TIA :y

There is a guide for the oil cooler removal which I'm following, but struggling to get the plate out between the "V" :(

Just tried it again, no joy >:(

It's literally mm too big, or so it seems. It catches at the top lip of the "V". Why did I start this??

Should know better than to play at being a mechanic ;D ;D

You have to line up the cut outs on the plate with the rest of the obstruction, then it just lifts out.

Cheers Zirk, be  trying that too.  As I'm getting slightly peeved. Having a break from it and going to clean the inlet manifold, replacement oil cooler and plenum. I'll have another go after, probably come straight out, but not holding my breath, lol

Siily question but I assume you have undone the 2 large brass nuts that hold the plate to the cooler body ? ;)

Plate will require aligning with the cutouts in the V and as you lift one side the other will give you the extra space to wiggle it free.

There's never a silly question when it comes to mechanics with me mate, lol.

All bolts undone, and the plate is free but I just can't seem to get it out from between the "V"

Just going to give it another go now I've calmed down a it  ::)

OK, just been out to have another go...... The light bulb has just flickered as reading your post. :-[ :-[

The 2 large brass bolts are not undone. Just realised how bloody thick I am today. My issue now is not having a socket big enough, that'll teach me for not reading the instructions thoroughly before starting!
Then to add insult to stupidity, I've managed to lose an inlet manifold rubber seal..... That's my luck  ::)

Mole Grips, Adjustable Pipe Wrench or worse case Screwdriver at an angle and Hammer off till finger loose.  ;)

Sure they are 30mm but my advise would be an adjustable spanner if nothing elsea s grips will cut into the brass .They shouldnt be on too tight but you would be wise getting a socket as they are best torqued up when refitting so will need socket at some point.

Dont forget the grey sealant needs to be allowed a good 12 hours to thorughly set off before filling with coolant so time to get a socket, maybe .

Good luck finding  the gasket seal :y

I'm waiting on a mate dropping a socket round for me along with the sealant. Spent the rest of the day cleaning the manifold, plenum and fuel rail.

Need to take the coolant header tank off next to clean all the c@@p out of it!!

You eat the rice whilst waiting for the socket to arrive.  ;)

So pour in hot water, washing powder and some rice and run as normal before flushing the system out?

I was going to use water mixed with Traffic Film Remover.

Is either or just as good?

I wouldn't put rice in the coolant system or washing powder, it does take a hell of a lot of flushing though, tried most things, Dishwasher tablets, pre melted are quiet good, best Ive found is Industrial Oven Cleaner, friendly towards the seals and rubber hoses, try and get it flowing throgh the system whislt getting it up to tempreture, keep an eye on the temp though.  :y

NOOOOO if any gets stuck in there as it will do  ::) it will gum things up I used forte make of cleaner 2 lots should get most of it out.  :y

And as Amba says you must leave the sealant to go hard preferably over night.  :y otherwise you will be doing it again.  ;D

Also if you can get your hands on an oil removal pump stick the tube down the front of the cooler space there will be a hole right down to the water pump that way you will clear most of the crud out of the block.  :y

I don't own one unfortunately and it's a bit late now. I've just finished putting the engine back together again. First time in my life I'm not left with any spare parts, nuts or bolts so that's a good start!!

It's gonna be an agonising wait now til tomorrow when I refill the oil and water ready to start her up. Well I hope she starts ;D ;D ;D

Whoa, no no no! Take the header tank off, insert rice, water and powder, then shake vigorously. Do not put rice, or any other foodstuffs, in your cooling system proper!
