2.5TD Auto Estate, 118k, owned and maintained for 15 years. At 76mph or so I now get a nuisance low pitched boom/whine, apparently from the rear of the vehicle, possibly driver's side. Same in 3rd or 4th gear, applying handbrake seems to have no effect on noise. Any suggestions. :-\ :-\ :-\

Brave putting handbrake on at 76mph ;D
Could be a wheel bearing, no noise at lower speeds, high speed only? :-\

Handbrake on often helps to identify if it is a wheel bearing as the noise can change.
The noise is only really apparent at about 76 and above, although there is also a suggestion of it as it passes through 50. :-\ :-\ :-\

try this, get to about 30 or 40 mph then take your foot of the gas, if the noise pauses for a split second and then start agen it will be your bearings in the back axle , i have had this in a vauxhall carlton and its a horible noise like a high piched whine.

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately there is no discernible noise at 30-40! (See OP)

Might be worth checking for an exhaust blow at the rear. Mine sounded just like a rumbling bearing when it leaked in front of the back box.
Also, check both rear tyres for anything untoward - strange wear pattern or any bulges, for example. failing that, it could be a wheel bearing, lobro joint or the diff, but very unlikely at that mileage, I'd say - unless a driveshaft gaitor has perished and let the joint deteriorate.

Swap the tyres over and see if the nosie moves.

Thanks guys, I'll check these out, exhaust sounds promising as tyres are almost new Enduros. :y :y :y
