Title: Wheel spacer advice.
Post by: ted_one on 16 May 2014, 20:20:27
Have just changed the springs and shocks for lowered Eibach springs and Bilstein B4 shocks all round on my 3.0 MV6 and  although happy with the result I was just looking at the rear wheels and to me they seem a little tucked away, and I was thinking that a set of spacers on the back would bring the wheels out a touch and fill in the arch. Not looking to go boy racer...just subtle to make the car look just right, front is OK so no change needed. I was wondering as to wether anyone has used them and wether they have experienced any problems using them. The car is due to go to WIM and would have liked to get spacers on before the set up gets done :-\ Would appreciate any advice as usual :y

I have used and still using both steel and T6 alu. alloy spacers (on all 4 wheels) .. T6 very lightweight and better.. however,  when used on the front , wishbones become more sensitive to road conditions (you can feel from the steering)..especially with old or cheapo wishbones..  cant predict what problems it may bring when used on the rear alone :-\

ps: thickness 20 mm

Spacers won't affect set up Ken. :)

Thanks cem, wishbones new ATP,track rods new, idler good,so ready for set up...but I can only see 5mm spacers on the bay of gay.So I presume that other thickness spacers are available but not on there :-\

Thanks Chris, not to sure about doing this as I don't have any experience of using them, so the only concern was,the handling/safety issues. :-\

Needs suitably longer bolts, but they should come with the spacer I would hope?

if you go with the custom made route (for me most practical) , be sure holes are perfectly placed/drilled, otherwise no matter what geo setup is applied,  you will always have problems.. the first set I had was steel and holes were unmatching ;D  so I discard them

Thanks Cem,I'll bear that in mind,I've looked around online..but there seems to be a 20mm limit on all of the suppliers including Eibach,Momo etc,so may well go to custom made if I need to :y

I have 20mm hubcentric spacers on the rear of mine and have had no issues in the last 6 years. They make the tyres fill the arches much better.
I got mine from eBay.

Nitro
Find a Waterjet cutting company near to you. They can cut what you like, just give all the dimensions and pitch circle
diameter of the holes. They will be able to cut any thickness you require within material stock sizes. T6 ali grade is 6082.
Waterjet is ok as it does not produce any heat or stress in the material.
If you happen to live in Kent near Staplehurst give us a call. Google Waterjet cutting Kent and look for the one in
Staplehurst with the funny name. We have done these before for other makes.  Our general tolerance is +/- 0.127mm  .005"

They will probably be a bit more expensive than stock items, as they are bespoke.

Nice one Lee,
I did look at those and I think I might take a punt, because as you say they work for you, can't say fairer than that :y
