Sadly the sump plug has stripped again (see post from 2011), ( sump drain pump had packed up, so have done the last few changes the old fashioned way.) I guess it will be helicoil next, I can get a kit that size for £13. :'(

Get 2nd hand sump.

Changing sump not an easy option on a TD. Plus the thread is just as likely to have gone or been weakened.:y

So long as it ain't the actual cast boss that isn't split ... as (once upon a time) happened to moi >:(
TD sumps cannot be removed without dropping-off the front subframe. Sorry Shack ... :'(

...as I learnt from your post in 2011 Byron! Hence opting for helicoil. :(

I helicoiled mine. BMW did make the sump from monkey metal, replacement will just strip.
When I said I helicoiled it, more accurately, that DTM fella did it for me :P
-
I Helicoiled mine a couple of years back, did the job a treat. It was a doddle to do, and better than the original. As said, swapping sumps is a Pig on the TD. I bought a cheapo set off ebay, can't remember how much but it was cheap and good.

when i had this I bought a p******t :'( I think sump plug which was just a nice size up from the original, tapped it out and never had any more problems, cant remember the size now but it was just right :y

Exactly what I did 3 years ago, and have only done 20k since, so 6 or 7 oil changes, only about 4 via the sump plug, and having had it strip once I was very light handed. I think the sump is made of chocolate!

Try fiting a Sahlbus oil drain valve afterwards, M14 x 1.5 is the thread size. Mine cost 37 quid delivered. Makes oil changes a lot easier

Check how low they hang, as mustn't be lower than the ribs/web of the sump each side of the drain plug...
...if it is lower, the landing after an 80mph launch does result in a catastrophic oil leak...
I never did find the drain plug/tap following this incident, but the helicoil it was screwed into survived without any damage. Threw in a spark plug, popped in some oil, drove home (slowly!), went back to a traditional drain plug.
Helicoil sump plug is the way forward on these engines :y

Maybe Marks DTM can remember how long the easy drain/tap thingie lasted. I don't think I managed a week with it :'(

Oi, I'm sure that was your response when it happened, and I called you in my hour of need when it happened >:(

I took one off the steel sump on a Mk1 Consul in a rally. Managed to stop in time, and limped home with a temporary wooden bung. Took the sump off and straightened the boss, and it was as good as new. ::)
