Title: Power Cables
Post by: Rog on 21 May 2014, 16:01:09
It's been some years now since anything electrical must be supplied with a power cable.

My company supplied computerised medical equipment. Every time we bought a monitor, a printer, a computer etc, it came with a power cable. We never used any of them as we fitted our own that had to be fed from an isolation unit.

I am now clearing out my office/workshop and have hundreds, literally, of them. I'm not going to attempt to sell them, can't be arsed and no time to mess around with time wasters. So, they'll go down the dump.

"Save the planet" I hear. "Recycle" is the mantra. This is an appalling waste. Anyone want two big boxes of IEC cables ?

£1 each or for the lot   ;D

I don't have an ebay account, never used it, and really can't be arsed. I don't even want paying for them even, I just want rid of them and think it's such a waste to take them down the rubbish dump.

I'll give you a quid for the lot plus postage to mine  ;D

All proceeds are going to my manual conversion of the mv6  :y

If you are willing to pay for shipping on at least 40Kg of cables, they're yours for free. But by courier, I'm not hauling stuff to a post office.

Nah, stuff it. Back of the car and down the dump

.

Ordinary IEC power cables, most with UK plug, some are male to female, most 1.8 or 2mtr length various colours.

Not exactly these, but this general type

Take them to your local metal recycling place. Insulated copper cable fetches £1000 per tonne, so 40Kg should be about £40. You'll need photo ID and a recent utility bill.

you possibly will also need to strip it before they will take it and if rog hasn't time to sell them I can not see him stripping 40 kg of cable

No. My local place gives £1000+ per ton for ordinary PVC insulated cable. It's more than double that if you can be arsed to strip it.

Offer them to a computer shop for a moderate fee

or give them to a charity.  :y

Cut the plugs off each end or they will class it as dirty, then take it to a scrap metal dealer

Damn right ! I would not even bother stipping one cable.

My position is that I am clearing out my office, not moving or relocating, shutting it down. So everything must go. I need to get this done by the end of May, so no time for messing about trying to get a few quid here and there.

Got shot of a good computer and printer yesterday via Freecycle
Maybe a whole pile of comb ring binding stuff today - Freecycle
Will try local computer shop with cables - free. If then dump
Dexion shelving - probably dump
Office furniture - local clearance company
Very old computers, remove drives and dump
30 years of paperwork - shredding company. But needs sorting first
etc, etc

I've got my work cut out  :o

I'd need to get a photo. But roughly 4 bays about 2 metres high. Old type that uses nuts and bolts not the newer slot-in type, very heavy duty. Free to anyone to collect, I will dismatle ( i hope  ;D)

Don't worry, Al has a cavernous boot.. ;D

Probably a question you don't have an exact answer for, but how wide is a 'bay' and how deep are they? Just in case there's any left after Al has been scavenging :)
