Title: Running Multiple Cars
Post by: D3vil5hift on 22 May 2014, 16:23:09
It would appear not rare for OMF members to own multiple cars. Is this not very costly or are the majority shared access to perhaps a partners car. The reason I ask is I would love to get myself a 2.6 MV6 manual saloon in the future. I presume my NCB would not transfer onto a second car. Am I missing a trick here?  :y

I was surprised when I asked Admiral recently that the cost of 2 was not much more than 1. Road Tax is a bit of a pain though.

Some Insurance Co will Mirror your exiting policy on to another Car. its something you have to ask if they do rather than something they offer.

Agree with Zirk - they work on basis you don't drive both at same time.

Assuming that you will not in fact be driving both at the same time, you could save on road tax by having the number plates on wing nuts......

I probably would be too, I got the impression that James thought it was especially good. All mine were £900-ish inclusive last year, which I thought was/is good, I'd had quotes of that alone for the Merc and some places even quoted more for a 700cc turbo'd Smart than for a group 16/17 3.0 Omega  ???

my second car (omega)  is on same basis as main car (Phaeton) except for mileage but it also has 4 drivers as opposed to just 2 on Phaeton - cost - Omega £230 and Phaeton £300 pa

I have built up NCD across 2 cars in my name, plus a 3rd in Mrs TB's name.  Another reason for getting the Battlebus was to keep the NCD up.

no idea how it is running multiple cars in UK but here not cheap.. :(

however, I live in a very crowded city with a huge parking problem and heavy traffic where driving and parking a large v6 is not practical..

so I use a small 4 pot daily.. I generally use Omega at the weekends or whenever we are crowded or for long journeys..

I guess most running costs are not really part of the equation, as when you are using one, you are not wearing out parts on the "spare".

So the biggest costs I see, aside from purchase/depreciation costs, are tax and insurance.

I don't see too much issue on costs tbh. It's the cheaper ends the market after all.

Problem I have is time to do all the work on them. 3.2 is like painting the fourth bridge keeping on top of maintenance. Then, you think you've fixed something, then the part fitted turns out to be a dud and needs re doing.

That REALLY hacks me off.  >:(

I tend to think that having more than one car, much like having more than one bike, means there's always a backup. Only falls down when everything breaks at once...

Indeed, owning 2 Omegas, its nice to have a spare car ;D. Since losing the little Rover in a car sandwich, we've really struggled...

...trouble is, we got another bloody Vauxhall, so its been known to have 3 faulty cars on the drive ;D

Good reading,

Sounds like it shouldn't be a problem. I'm with Bell (Admiral Grp) so will give them a call,

I have just phoned Churchill car insurance and insured an astra 1800 elegance automatic mk4 along with my omega fully comp on both and as stated earlier on here by another member ,they told me that they mirror the n.c.d.between the two cars because i am the only named driver on both policies get an only driver discount. And at the moment they are giving basic green flag cover at the roadside and a free hire car if needed...ok..it is only a 1.0 ltr but its free....And i am an old retired person,so i reckon for just under £600 for both is fine  :D :y

But the conversely I've just had a quote to add my 24 year old daughter to one of our cars, 1600 auto C3 - she's had a licence since Jan 2008 & been driving her own car for the past few years. Last year I paid a little over £900 to insure all three cars on a 'Family Fleet' policy and the quote to add her till the end of the policy - Oct - was ..................

£1300  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o  :o or £51something a week  ???

Crikey that's expensive! Although you should probably be thankful she's a she and not a he or it'd be even worse.. ;D

My other half pays under £300 fully comp on her 2001 998cc Micra.. it'd be cheaper for you to buy her a Micra and insure it (and run it!) than to pay the insurance on the C3.. ;D

[edit] I should probably add that my other half is only 22.. I know, cradle snatcher, etc, etc.. ;D

MrsGK wanted to go on my insurance on the Elite, bearing in mind its about 500 for me, they wanted over a grand to put her on as a named driver. If i get a new quote it adds about £30...
