Title: TB's tyres
Post by: TheBoy on 29 May 2014, 20:23:26
Dunlop Sport Maxx RT, 235/45/17

Not down to wear markers yet (but close), but outside edge is probably illegal

Why? they reckon about 15K for the Honda Accord 2.2 and that is FWD so gets a double hit......... :-\ :-\

I reckon that 15k is a pipe dream for TB in any car ::)

Depends if Mrs TB has been driving.

I put them same tyres on my TXS last summer (July), and noticed when putting the winter wheels on (Oct) how far down they had gotten, so my guess might be tainted!  :D

Must say though that the grip is astoundinging in either wet or dry conditions, but I don't fancy having to put on 2 sets a year!  :'(

Even when bald as a badgers backside, even in this wet.

May help explain that little misbehave last weekend though, hacking at around a roundabout.

Photo does do outside edge wear justice

Which side is which? There seems to be tearing along the tread at the first groove from the top :-\

Post by: TheBoy on 30 May 2014, 14:32:01
top is inside edge, bottom is outside edge.

Too high cornering speed, (assume you don't stand on the brakes into a corner), coupled with too low tyre pressure. That cracking on the first inside groove is a concern though :-\

Whats wrong with that then?

::) is that tyre near side or off side and is opposite one worn the same way or in reverse :-\

That was NSF. OSF was similar wear pattern, though slightly less pronounced.

Actually, the OSF is down to the wear markers in the middle though.

Braking into mid roundabout from dual carriageway+ speeds by any chance... detroys the outer edge and tries to rip the inner edge off in the process, not helped by low pressures... at a guess.

Owners manual suggests using full load pressures if regularly running at, ahem, high speed... and don't forget the 150-200kg boot load :y

Which they would be, given the osf wheel is only loaded as you change direction and accelerate off the roundabouts, so less vertical load, coupled with a higher lateral load :-\

What you need is some Avon Roadrunners

Tend to run fronts at 33-34psi on fronts (and 28-30 rears).

Was never clear on what the manual's definition of "high speed" was...

iirc anything over a ton, but was trying to be polite ;D

That said, given the abundance of dual carriageways and roundabouts, the loads imposed with suggest higher pressures regardless of actual speed :-\

Perfectly legal that tyre  :y

Outside edges can be below 1.6mm, as long as tread can still be seen (which it can) then its legal  :y

As long as the central 75% is above 1.6 mm and no cords are showing :y

On those 235 width tyres, that's the outer 29mm on both sides :y

But with the shape those have worn, you might struggle to legally establish where the sidewall ends and the tread begins :-\
Title: Re: TB's tyres
Post by: TheBoy on 31 May 2014, 09:09:29
The tread has definitely worn through in places. Besides, even if they are/aren't legal, they're spent, and need replacing.

Weirdly, that outside area is 'lumpy', not having a smooth circumference, which I would have thought would have been felt at the wheel. For some reason, that specific car has always made a good job of masking any issues that would have the highly strung TBE whinging about.

The answer to the poll was a shade over 20k...   ...so a fair bit down on the 24k I used to get from the TT's

Blimey! :o

That's quite impressive. Judging by the way my KU39s are disappearing they won't make it anywhere near that mileage, and I don't have anything like the number of roundabouts on my commute.

The rears only managed about 10k (I'd need to double check how long they did last).

14,700 from my fronts so far. The costco ones you might recall ....?

So yes I'd give TB his figure (...combined over both tyres ;D )
