Title: Noisy lifters
Post by: Andy A on 31 May 2014, 09:24:44
If the car has not been started for a few days there is a loud tapping from the top of the engine. The longer the time between not starting the loader the tapping and the longer it takes before it goes quiet. I believe this to be caused by the lifters.

The engine is a Z22XE @ 113K. Do these engines suffer from noisy lifters and should I be worried?

Thanks

Old oil ?

Do a few quick oil changes and on last one add some Wynn,s treatment. That should calm them down ,but they can get noisey with age as degraded oil causes them to stick and gum up.

As above, do some quick oil changes, then put some Wynns in the last one.

If that doesn't cure it, then it needs replacement lifters.

Also be aware than a failing exhaust manifold or manifold gasket can sound similar!

Done a new VX oil & filter change a few days ago.  :y

Do I need to keep putting a new filter in on, on every oil change or just put another new one in on the last oil change when I add some Wynn's Hydraulic Valve Lifter additive?

The exhaust looks ok.  :y

I also use ZX1 additive in the engine oil.

I wouldn't change the filter every time, personally.

I also wouldn't use that, to be honest. Most of these type of additives have particulates in them, and they can clog the small passageways in hydraulic lifters.

So far as I can tell, it doesn't contain any. http://www.team-zx1.com/Micro-Oil please let me know if you think it does and I'll stop using.

Nine times out of ten, Wynns lifter treatment does the job :y
