An amazing feat and an awesome endeavour. Many a good man died that day[although even one is too many].Dad was a navy man and was on mine sweeping duties throughout the conflict. But yes although they didn't look on themselves as such they were a heroic bunch!
At risk of being shot down in flames for this I really think that it should also be remembered that many a good brave German died that day also.

As many know, I've spent the last week in Normandy, visiting the many sights of the area and commemorating what happened 70 years ago.

I believe that this year will be the last of the truly poignant anniversaries, as it moves out of living memory into history. The Normandy Veteran Association is being wound up this year for obvious reasons  :'(

We need to remember that the sacrifices made on 6th June 1944, and in the weeks that followed, changed the shape of Western Europe. We need to remember why D-Day happened, and must never forget those who gave up their life in order to achieve that.

You only have to stand in one of the many cemeteries to feel the sacrifice made.

Its all too easy to say "only" xxxx men died on the beaches, as it was a lot lower than I had envisaged in my mind before I looked it up before I went. But you walk in, say, the American one at Omaha, and just start to read some of the names on the graves, and it somehow makes it more personal - all these men had families and loved ones back home, far, far away.

I said it before, but nothing prepares you for the scale.

I'm not the emotional type, but I defy anybody not to be moved. I know I was  :-[

That is exactly what I meant.
