Title: turning over - wont fire
Post by: BIGDOG on 09 June 2014, 16:53:17
Hi there
I have a 2.5 td (T reg). had been left sitting for about 2 weeks and then I went to start it. Turned over at first but no vroom - many attempts where tried then the starter went. The starter has been replaced and the battery is fully charged, turns over but still no vroom. The fake AA tried with some quick start and it sounded as if it was about to fire, but no. No engine management lights have come on and my garage is getting confused. Any ideas / is there a way I can test the ECU?

Firstly, it is worth complaining bitterly to the AA for their mechanic's use of Quickstart - it has great potential to damage your engine - NEVER use it!
As for your starting problem - crankshaft sensor?

Ron.

I,ll give the garage the heads up Tuesday - thanks  :).

Though if it could be something else I'm up for giving them a few suggestions.

How much diesel is in the tank? Is the fuel filter full?

Crank sensor failure on a TD is quite rare - but if you do need to change it, you would have seen it when you changed the starter

I would have thought that the garage would have noticed the fuel filter and as for the diesel in the tank........ I may own an Omega but really I'm that stupid !!!  :D

The reason he is asking this question is because with a tired lift pump the TD struggles to start on less than a quarter of a tank

He's no saying your stupid, it's a valid diagnostic question :y

If that's the pump in the belly of the beast, I believe that its being checked today. Don't really think anyone is calling me tick - just mentioned for a bit of a grin  ;) - ..............and yes, the tank is only one quarter full but it has started with less. I will pass the info to said garage though - thanks  :y

Even though the weather is warm I wouldn't rule out Glow Plugs, the TD's do get a bit lazy to start when left along for a while, also crank off on of the Injectors and see if its spitting Fuel.
