Hi having a debate with myself. Want a bit of extra oomph with the caravan, and a little more mpg generally. Getting about 40mpg at minute. I'd like 45/50,ish (economy is the only thing I can fault the car on)
Problem is, I'm a tight was and quotes for a remap are coming back around £175. Ideally I don't want to spend more than £100, (hoping £70 at top end really).
Problem with remaps, it involves me knowing what I'm looking for, as I'm aware since are blatant cons.
So I'm putting my discussion with myself on here for people's input.
The car is a 2001 2.2dti

My advice is pay the extra, get it mapped by somebody who knows what they are doing, and also insist on getting emissions checked after before parting with cash,we had our fleet remapped at work several years ago,and none of the ivecos passed emissions at mot time.

you want economy and more power.. not an easy equation.. many chips on ebay just crap.. and branded not cheap either.. remapping may work but not sure results will be as you wish.. :-\
-
Pretty certain the DTI's ECUs cannot take "chips", so you have to take it somewhere to be flashed. So straight away, that removes 80% of the cons and retards, as you can't do from egay.

In my experience the 2 tend to come hand in hand. A wider power/torque band means engine under less strain = improved mpg. I usually have older cars that are fully mechanical that you can tune with a spanner and a screw driver and get the desired results

more power always comes with more fuel cost.. a tuner may alter the map differently at rpm range , but I doubt it will be more economical than the factory map.. assume its choosen to be economical at low rpms , pulling a caravan will be slower :-\
-
If you fanny about and rev the tits off all the time then yes a map / tune will reduce mpg. But it opens up power lwer down the rpm which means less revs needed = improved economy. I got my old rover 200 2.0tdi from 45/50mpg to around 60/65mpg. It went like stink too when I gave it the beans. But I don't tune for the track so to speak

The first thing to do is de-cat (or remove the innards of the cat) - cat isn't required for MOT on this diesel as it's a Smog test only.
Once de-cated you can look at a remap but it's worth modifying the location of the intercooler beforehand so that it actually sits in some airflow!
At the end of the day its a four cylinder 120BHP engine with 210Nm of torque so it's never going to set the tarmac on fire, however we always found it plenty capable of towing our 1200Kg (unladden) caravan and all the associated junk to Newquay every year.
-
Oops, 280Nm not 210Nm ::) Doh
-
They do re-flash quite succesfuly do the 2.2 dti's in my experience, an extra 15-20bhp with slightly improved economy
-
90% of UK diesels will give more power and better economy if remapped.
Its a simple reason for this.
Cars are set up to run on standard fuel which in Europe is of lower quality than the UK, hence if its mapped for UK fuel it becomes more efficient improving power and MPG.
The down fall is if you go to Europe it will run crap as the quality of fuel is lower.
Yes there is a certain amount of ECU self learning but it cannot cope with the full range - much the same as very high octane petrol makes a bit of difference but not as much as it wold do if it was mapped to suit

Get intouch with a company called superchips, were based in St Albans, the guy there knows his stuff, and is very helpfull,he also trains people and might know some1 in your area :y
-
if I were you with that torque values I would prefer to install a 6 speed manual box which is suitable.. so that you can have more options to play with different gear ratios and drive the car as you wish.. but of course wont be cheap as mapping ..
