Post by: Vamps on 13 June 2008, 13:29:00
Same thing happened today, went into downloading windoes updates, and when back would not conect to the internet, internet OK and no faults found in the connection.

This time I knew what to do and did a System restore to two days ago, before these problems started. :y
Twice now it has downloaded something that is bad for my Laptop, any idea's  Please not in computer talk with lots of shorthand. :-[

It is not downloading anything bad to your computer.  It's updating it and possibly resetting some settings.  Don't do the system restore again.  Go back and update windows then try these steps.

Open internet explorer, click the tools tab in the top right hand corner, then internet options, then connections, then lan settings - make sure the automatically detect settings box is checked then click ok and ok.  Close internet explorer then re-open and with any luck you should be back in business.

If that doesn't work try turning the firewall off and repeat the steps.  Turn the firewall back on afterwards.

I've had internet explorer stop working randomly in the past and this has always sorted it.  If it wasn't checked that will hopefully sort it.

If it doesn't fix it you could reinstall the software your isp gave you - make sure you have the relevant user names and passwords to hand though.

There are probs with IE stopping working randomly after updates especially after updating to IE 7  thats then causes you problems of not been able to download microsoft updates (to XP) I personally never use IE always use Mozilla firefox to browse internet etc far easier to manage..
Finally  have read some people who allow auto updates have had major probs after updating to Service Pack 3, its not needed really so just check what your installing in future M/soft would love us all to by vista £$£$£$ and its not really worth buying yet ! It still is poor for gaming & older hardware... :y

Mike's using Vista and the service packs are very important.  You should never have a pc running without critical updates.  They are there to keep your computer secure.

Vista ain't great on older hardware - for P4 and earlier, stick to XP (should get a small perfromance boost with SP3). For Core chips, Vista works well.  For AMD chips, buy a new PC :P

There are some more suggestions on this thread.
http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/701368-ie-7-disconnects.html

I would definately download Firefox from here:
http://download.mozilla.org/?product=firefox-2.0.0.14&os=win&lang=en-GB before you run Windows Update again. It gives you an alternative to IE for access to the net which could help trouble shooting.

One more thing you could try, this has helped me in the past. If the internet is not working, reset all your modems/ routers etc. The sequence for switching off is - work from the computers along the chain of connection to the socket on the wall. To switch back on - work backwards from the socket and give each piece of kit 2 minutes to fully boot.

Lastly, do this on the affected machine:
Click Start.
Click Run from the menu.
Type CMD in the box.
A black command session window opens.
At the command prompt, type the following exactly
ipconfig /release
Wait for it to stop working.
Then type (exactly again)
ipconfig /renew
This should reset the windows network stack.

Keep us posted.

Jim

P.S. do the ipconfig thing if you lose connection after updating.

Try http://www.microsoft.com/library/toolbar/3.0/search.aspx?View=en-us&charset=utf-8&qu=WNTIPCFG.EXE - win version of ipconfig from microsoft - just click renew/release as required.

Didn't seem to manage this, I am on Vista. :-[ My automatic Lan setting does not stay set. I have changed updates so that it has to ask me, therefore by not giving permission should be OK bt needs sorting. :(
