Throughout history, there have always those sorts of events where everyone remembers where they were at the time.
Not being old enough to remember the JFK assassination or the original Apollo landings, for me I guess that just leaves 9/11.
I was on a Windows 2000 Infrastructure Design course in Cirencester when news started to come in that 2 planes had crashed into the WTC.
-
9/11, at GrandmaT's, I remember commenting, 'What film is this?' When walking in :-[
-
9/11 Delivering parcels in Salford, just been given my own round that week.
Hillsborough at the reception after our wedding.
-
I was in borden at a set of lights watching the footage of 9/11 in the window of a curry's....thinking too myself which film is that??? :'(
-
11/9 ;) University College Hospital estates department I was setting up an HP A0 plotter when the first plane hit
Apollo 11 - I was 5 years old & I remember being allowed to stay up and watch (on our 405 line black & white TV). Seeing the images now they look so grainy, our TV always looked like that ;D
JFK - 4 months before I was born so I don't remember that one. ::)
-
I was sat in front of the tv when it came on and i thought it was a advert for a new film. Until the second plane hit

We were living in a shithole just outside of Nottingham at the time. I remember the news reporting that the twin towers had collapsed yet the television footage still showed them burning but intact.

As for JFK ....I was 3 years old and had just enjoyed 'Muffin the Mule'... ::) ::) :)
-
First launch of space shuttle Columbia - watched in school assembly hall
Eruption of mnt St. Helens - watched at school in TV room.
11/9 - mixing a batch of Cadbury's purple Ink for easter egg cartons.
Death of Princess Di - sat at home recovering from a monster of a stag night.
Bradford City fire - was actually watching match at home on TV (unusual, to say the least, cos I hate footlball)
-

I remember the legs on the lunar lander being painful if trodden on ::) I can't remember if it was mine or my brothers or a friends :(
-
I was fuelling/recovering from a Bacardi Spice induced hangover when Princess Di, er, died :'(
And was painting the sitting room window frames when the world went to shit on 9/11... Had only popped the telly on to have Diagnosis Murder on in the background ::) suffice to say the painting got left and I nearly got a blocking when Mum came home... She hadn't seen/heard the news at school, so soon understood why I hadn't touched the windows ;D
-
Apollo 11 I was at secondary school and they got a colour TV in the assembly hall especially for the occasion and it was in black and white, ::) ;D
JFK I remember seeing it on the news when I got home from school. :y
Wold Trade centre I was hanging a front door for a customer when it came on the radio, then she said come look at the tele. :(
Columbia I was actually on holiday in Florida at a friends :o
-
Oh and sleeping rough on a bench at Swissair ticket desk in what was Terminal Two at Heathrow when Ytshak Rabin died...
-
9/11, just returned from a cousins wedding, we sat down and switched the TV on.
-
Working in a tall office building in La Defense. In true French fashion it was empty within an hour of the news and the stations were overcrowded resulting in the police conducting crowd control.
The place was like a ghost town by mid afternoon.
-
I heard about the death of Princess Di on the radio whilst driving a truck across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Aussies were quite nice to us Brits for a very short time before regressing to their natural obnoxious state! ;D
I was in a remote part of Namibia when I heard about 9/11 and we managed to get the BBC World Service on the radio and sat round listening. It was about a week before returning to civilisation and finally seeing it on TV. :(

Diana's death. Halted a party immediately as everyone gathered round the telly. Sobered up pretty quick.
911. Heard about it at work, and came homr to H's flat to see the live pictures in utter disbelief. Also knowing full well such an event would "wake the giant" pearl harbour style.
Utd winning the treble. Three Tuns pub, at the bar, stood on my stool, banging on the ceiling amid a crowd of other lunatics.
Murray winning Wimbledon. Sat right here actually. ::)
Apparently I did see the moon landings, but was too young to remember. In Pinner.

9/11 ..was working for a bank .. at that hour I was in the office of the IT department.. and my ex called me and told the news.. and my first toughts were many would suffer after which became true :(
-
Nightshift Trafpol for Dianas death. Watching the then confused and uncertain events unfold on the muster room telly whilst grabbing a sarny and a cuppa.
Just off the ranges at Bisley for the end of the Police rifle shooting comp and watching 9/11 on the telly at St Georges Lodge over a couple of beers and a very hushed assemblage of cops from far and near.....
-

-
Chernobyl: the only thing I remember is our muppet politicians told us that the radiation didnt effect us.. which is prooved to be wrong soon >:(
Berlin wall down: all I remember is my thoughts : "why they build it now why they break down?"
you may check the list of events from here :y

I may have only been 3 years old but I'd already downed a bottle of scotch that day, so nothing, human or animal, was 'off limits'... ;D ;D ;)

On 9/11 my wife and I were checked in at Heathrow waiting to go to New York and then on to Bermuda. I got a call from my office to get to a TV screen. It was all kicking off but BA info was that flight was going to depart. It took a couple of hours to retrieve luggage. We went to Italy instead a day later.
-
Apollo moon landing - at a girlfriends in Ashby de la Zouch doing what boys and girls do in front of the TV
Berlin wall down - in Dusseldorf in a bar helping the West Germans drown their sorrows (the general feeling there was that it would financially cost them dear)
JFK assasination - in a pub in Dulwich Village
-
Had been on a German exchange trip to Steinfeld in the Eifel Mountains in late October '89. You could tell summat was about to happen as we were held up for two hours at the Border on the way into (then) West Germany...
Went back the following year and you couldn't hear anything except... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5KcRl1p2waM which I can't stand to this day :-\
... and this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYVi7n7aoB4 which is just plain wrong, but I like it ::)

21 October 1966:
* The day of the tragic Aberfan disaster: http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/witness/october/21/newsid_3194000/3194860.stm :'(
* Teacher Dick Mountjoy gave classmate 'Lanky' Griffiths and I 'six of the best' in front of an astonished class of 8 year-olds :o
-
Surely he didn't try and pin that on you :o
-
22/11/1963 sat watching TV when a newsflash came on and before anything was said my cousin Barbara said " Kennedy's been shot" then they announced the fact that indeed JFK had been shot in Dallas. :'(
30/07/1966 Watching TV and when the forth goal went in I ran outside cheering and our neighbour asked "Who won" ;D ;D
9/11/2001 Was travelling down the M1 to pick SWMBO up from work when it was announced on RADIO 4 that there were reports of a light aircraft hitting one of the towers, sat in the pub watching it all unfold on TV as the second plane hit :o >:( :'(
-
I was at a B&B in Keswick when Diana died, I broke it to the man running it, he was so shocked it was unbeleivable.
Was at my normal work desk for 9/11 very strange atmosphere that day!
-
11/9 - At work in Beeston Nottingham, was walking throguh the Asic design teams office and one of them had BBC news on a small TV.
Death of Princess Di - Sore head, that I do recall.
Bradford City fire - I was also watching world of sport on TV, the speed at which is spread has always stayed with me
-
11/9/2001 - My 50th birthday so a day from work booked off to go out with the family that night. Son phoned from work and simply said ... "turn the TV on" and put the phone down. I don't think I moved from in front of the box all day, and the evening out just did not happen
27/5/1993 - XV193 Crash in Scotland - Driving up the M6 and had a phone call that started - "Ok. Thank God it's not you" .. from a relative who had heard about it on the radio.... not a good way to find out.... :( I was proud to be asked to be a pall bearer for the Flight Engineer who was a good friend.
30/01/2005 - XV179 shot down in Iraq - Engineer leader/Duty engineer on the squadron when the news came in, things got very messy, very fast ...
Odd the things you can't forget ....
-
Can't remember. ;D
-
9/11 being the only major event I can really recall - I was at work, the TV in our little reception area always had the news on and I walked past the window into reception to see the tower on fire. Didn't get a lot done that day but did call my mum to say "Have you got the TV on?" .. didn't even cross my mind to wish her a happy birthday.
-
11th September I was going up to Northampton to see the guys fixing the curtain wall on the Sol Central, went into cafe over the road to get a drink and sort his application and they had news on.
-
Moon landing, my old man got me up and we both curled up on a few blankets in front of the gas fire to watch it on a old black and white tv.
Just remember my dad kept waking me up every time I fell asleep saying I had to watch it ???
Didn't realise until 20 years or so later that I had seen it ::)
Bradford City fire, watching it in the naafi bar at binbrook :'(
Spent the night in the cells after I took offence to some vile little shit from Sheffield dancing around singing burn you bastards, burn >:( >:( >:(
All charges disappeared when a couple of the coppers in there at the time "had a word" in the morning ;)
To this day, my right elbow still clicks and cracks when I bend it where the little shit tried to take my head off with a pool que .............. put it this way, he lost :-X ;)
Lady Diana, driving the missus to work on the morning. Couldn't understand why all the suicide music was being played.
Gobsmacked when the station DJ came over with the announcement. Shit day that :(
11/9 (English way) ;)
Doing some electrical work in a bar in hull.
Had just sat down to drink a coffee and chat the manager up when the live sky news feed on the TV came on showing the reel of the first plane to hit. Then it cut to a live feed just as the second one went in :o
Stomach turned to ice because I knew it was going to kick off big style :(
-
Hillsborough - on the way back to Liverpool from playing at a boys brigade concert in Blackpool, one very hushed coach journey with some very worried parents etc. I just remember the numbers getting bigger every few miles
9/11 - on a day off and just couldn't believe what I was seeing, like others I just phoned someone and said " Have you f'kin seen this "
Lee Rigby's murder- At a conference dinner in Brum, thought the ex squaddie fella next to me was taking the piss until I saw the seriousness in his eyes :'(
-
Pan-Am, I was at Mums rapidly ringing round friends back at home trying to find out if a friend and colleague was on it (she was on a later Pan Am flight)
-
9/11...working for the NHS, delivering an electric chair to an old biddy. News on radio of the 1st plane hitting,we got to her house just as 2nd one hit. She made us a cuppa and the 3 of us sat glued o the TV for the next 2 hrs!
I remember thinking this is gonna be the start of world war 3. Scary days.
-
Pan-Am...Lockerbie is 13 miles from me. I was there that night.
-
Pan-Am...Lockerbie is 13 miles from me. I was there that night.

I was at my Grans' in Norfolk for that... recall seeing it on the news, kept flitting between the nose and the houses iirc :-\
-
9/11 I was out delivering that day. One of our customers said come and look at this on the telly just as the second plane hit, the mood in the van all day was quite somber as we listened to it on radio.
Diana death I remember well. Was out nightclubbing in southend(tots2000 before you ask Al ;D) and was in a taxi on way home with on of the fittest birds I have ever pulled in my life :-*. When the driver said have you heard the news about Diana? Turned on telly when we got home and that was it I never got anything that night :(
Hillsborough I remember being around my dads I was 10 at the time and did really know what was going on. Just remember the guy screaming at a copper to help and the copper ignoring him :'(
Herald of free enterprise I remember quite well to again sat watching tv when a news flash came on saying about the ferry, my only thought at being 9 at the time was how was we going to do our day trip to France if the ferry has sunk :)
-
Herald of free enterprise
I went on that to France in the 80's (and IIRC, came back on Pride of Free Enterprise)
-
was on holiday in Dorset when 9/11 happened but was glued to the telly later that day, got a phone call early in the morning when Diana's car crashed & went to the fun factory expecting to get sent to the scene asap but was sent home when it was announced she had died.
-
9/11 - lower manhattan, battery park city, right in thick of it :o
-
Surely he didn't try and pin that on you :o
Nah, Al ...
We got caught fair and square larking about.
Mr Mountjoy was an excellent teacher ... he merely sent-out the message loud and clear, that behavioural standards will be maintained in his classroom.
No more was ever said about this episode, fair play to the man ;)
And if I'd told my late father ...
I'd probably have endured further punitive measures. He worked for the NCB; and would've been pre-occupied with Aberfan at this time, so I said nowt at home ;)
-
9/11, had a great walk along North Norfolk coast, got back to Sheringham for a pint and saw it on bar T/V.
