Title: World Cup.
Post by: chrisgixer on 14 June 2014, 00:05:54
Anyone see the Spain v Holland game?

Wow. Stunning performance from Holland. Sympathies to Iker Casillas. He looked physically ill.

(Apologies to the non footballists btw, bloody World Cup is everywhere at the moment)

Not seen either game so far (for a host of reasons), and I won't be watching tonights either due to the time.

Just watched the 1978 ones on telly (beeb 2?), as that was the first world cup competition I remember (bit young to remember the '74 one), and the disappointment of backing Scotland that year (as our mongrels hadn't qualified).

Oh yes. Either itv or BBC. Can't remember which.

....er, I don't remember chief Booer Adrian Charles insulting my ears, so it might of been BBC. I think they take a while to make programmes available on iplayer.

A day perhaps? :-\

Just finished watching it. I really think the Dutch tore apart the Spanish defence in the second half. And for a 30 yr old to outrun the Spanish defence, amazing!

Who was the Spanish centre forward? Play for Athletico's Madrid. Someone's henchman.

Nasty pieces of work, and substituted thankfully.

IIRC Spain always get off to a poor start, just scrape through the group stages and then do alright.

Lets hope the Dutch manager does as well at Man Utd. It was reported that he lost his temper during training last week, it obviously worked on the Dutch team getting their tactics right on the night.

Refereeing is shocking in this World Cup.

I guess FIFA are too worried about other aspects to come up with daft rules and regs and overly strict referees this time around.

Remember that stupid new ball the Germans had used in training before anyone else even knew about it? Then it was at the World Cup to the fuddlement of all the other teams?

Can't understand why Pearce tried to make something out of nothing when the French scored their 2nd. The ball went over the line. Full stop.

What do we want...a strong Premier League bringing some of the best players from around the world appearing week in week out ...or.... a restriction on overseas players to allow home grown players to "possibly" do better every 2 years for 3 weeks or so in that year - ignoring the group intermediate qualification stages where we generally see very weak competition from the countries grouped with us?

TV money is going to the overseas players and not enough to produce sufficient talent in UK. Only 25% at best of top 4 English Prem Club players are English and about a third over the Prem League as a whole.

I did not watch any of the Uruguay game as had better things to do - the Italy game told me everything I needed to know.

Covered here to an extent.

http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/worldcup/england-world-cup-2014-harry-redknapp-claims-players-didnt-want-to-play-for-the-three-lions-while-he-was-manager-of-spurs-9554872.html

Part of his opinion was based on the amount of abuse England players get. Beckham springs to mind, after being fouled by Simeone he kicked out and got sent off. Then endured incredible stick for months after.

Look at the comments here. Why would a professional player endure that "aggro" ?

Say he makes a mistake. Has a bad game, gets sent off, misses a sitter or whatever. He'll get slaughtered. How can anyone play the free flowing end to end care free football we demand. And i do mean demand, knowing we will then abuse them if they arse it up?

It's Football. Entertainment. Not life and death.

England players rarely perform as well for England as they do for their clubs. We need to support them through thick and thin so they know they won't get abused if things go wrong. That's not support.

The pundits are as bad. Like they never opposed up anything in their careers. The other team score a goal. Let's say its a brilliant goal. Instantly they're on the defenders back, ignoring the genius of the attacking scorer.

Most of those geniuses play in the premier league by the way.

There can be no greater thing than to play for your country and represent the hopes of your fans and your fellow countrymen.

Where it falls down is our side is full of overpaid prima donnas . I love the bit about trying to get out of playing in some games. Drop them from the squad.

I don't buy Reknapps comments one bit.

We’ve got good players, players who are good week-in, week-out in the Premier League. You look at half the other teams in the tournament and there are loads of players who come to the Premier League and couldn’t get a game ... You know we’ve got better players than them but for some reason with good manager after good manager, we just don’t get results." ;D ;D

What is it, 48 years since we won a major tournament? Hodgson is getting something like £3.5 million.

My take? England isn't hungry for success. We just take part and don't expect to do well.

Trouble is, for the past 10yrs, we've constantly built our team around that useless, lazy, thick idiot Rooney, and previously "set piece only" girlie poofter bloke. Once we stop doing that, we stand a chance.

I doubt Shrek will play another game for England, so here goes :y

Hopefully  :y :y

Again very unlucky not to score very late on in extra time. I did feel rather sorry for Switzerland and felt Argentina didn't deserve the win :(

Thec manager isn't the problem... in order to manage, one first needs a team ::)

Interesting how three of the strongest countries in European football have performed so badly as national sides...

The Germans play as a team, to devastating effect tonight, which only serves to highlight our failings...

Our National Squad should be selected from below championship level, say a full time squad of 40 on four year contracts :-\ That would see us enter a dedicated team for an Euro tournament and a World Cup, plus Olympic and Commonwealth Games along with al international friendlies...

They would play and train as a permanent team, leaving all the prima donna bullshit in the Championship and Premiership :y
