Title: Graunching noise
Post by: iansoutham on 15 June 2014, 14:52:31
Can anyone else confirm my suspicions on a graunching-type noise from the front of the car when going over speedbumps. It sounds to me to be like it is coming from the topmounts, but I have taken the antiroll bar bushes off today and greased them up with some copper-slip and the front wishbone bushes are already polybushed (could be going dry I suppose).

Handles fine, etc... just this annoying noise that I can hear over the radio. I do now drive over quite a few speed bumps to and from work, but do not race over them.

Springs are fine and unbroken, nothing else seems out of place and there are no other clonks that I do not already know about.

Re grease the poly bushes and go from there?

Failed rubber bushes can creak. But if the handling is ok otherwise, just leaves the polys really.

I wouldn't use copper slip grease on any rubber. It can make the rubber swell up by 20% over time. I read this a few years ago but I can't find it now. Will post if I do.

Yep copper slip is not suitable with rubber.....more to do with  putting on threads to stop things seizing or to put a smear on the pad backing to stop brake squeal that kind of thing...

And to stop polys making a rubbing noise :)

Use silicone grease, known as water pump grease.

Poly bushes are supplied with copper slip as a lubricant from the maker, powerflex.

Nobody here suggested lubricating rubber bushes. If a rubber bush squeaks/creaks or makes any sort of noise, it has failed. Bin it, don't lubricate it, unless to prove the fault of course.
