Title: Camping
Post by: omega3000 on 18 June 2014, 20:29:15
What essentials or do you take say for a 2 day stop  :-\ Some have said they dont take a cooker they just buy from a local take out . For me its about the whole enjoyment of being self sufficient cooking your own stuff and making a hot drink when all the shops are shut  :)
Maybe need some bug spray for those pesky midges  ::)

I'm not taking a fridge this time, as not getting a hookup. I will take 2 or 3 burners to make a cuppa, and maybe breakkie.

Mrs TB will insist on taking the gas fire ;D

I only camp for a couple of weekends each year, and that's only for car shows.
Although I have a good tent and sleeping bag, we worked out years ago that cooking and camping is a pain. So it's takeaways for me, with a large coolbox for cold beer and drinks.

Will you have an electric hook-up? Otherwise it will have to be whatever gas cooker you have.
But come what may, you MUST have the means to fry bacon, eggs, sausages and mushrooms out in the open! Nothing beats that smell, early (-ish) in the morning al fresco.......
 :)   ;D   :P

But what if there's no takeaway facility and if there is its usually quite expensive  :y

As an ex Scout and Scouter I feel there are only 3 essential items needed;

Alcohol

Food

A Caravan....................... ;D ;D ;D :y

I only have me to feed, so a tenner a night is easily worth not having the hassle of stoves, cooking gear, keeping the food somewhere and doing the cooking and clearing up afterwards. And I've several years worth of disposable cutlery etc. It's probably only a fiver extra that I actually spend. I don't eat breakfast, so that's a non-issue.

Although I have recently found a small gas-burner in a cupboard, so I might indulge in some decent fresh coffee at the Supernationals, rather than get mugged at about £3 a cup.

Sadly, there's very little in the way of security that you can have in a tent, and these days there's always some scaly-backed dog-self-abuser who will exploit that fact!

We use a foldup double burner with grill.  Done many a fantastic meal when in French France.  Coolbox is handy but for the essentials, a bin liner, box of beer and a couple of bags of ice does the deed...

Like leaving your worldly possessions under a blanket on a beach and asking for folk to guess whats underneath.  Winner gets to keep it.....   :D :'(

Buy bottles from Asda/Lidle/Morrisons/Waitrose/whatever.  Yes, you use water but campsite water is often - in my experience - a bit suss.

I'm a caravanner, it's always packed with the basics ready to have last bits thrown in before leaving anywhere. Not much different to work though as I'm a wagon driver out all week. Although caravan is very spacious compared to wagon (but if I'm honest I prefer the wagon. I wonder if work will let me take it camping....  ::))

I would really like a caravan , sometime in the future would be good . Only trouble with camping is no toilet facility unless you can get a portable thing  :-\

Five litres will not be enough, especially if you need to do the washing up at your tent - or will there be sinks and things? Those collapsible water bags save space, and/or 2 litre pop bottles that you have emptied.
For the mozzies, citronella candles and that stuff that you wipe on exposed body parts are worth having, but don't bother with those little ultrasonic beepers that are supposed to repel mozzies - they don't!

Get skin so soft from Avon (green bottle) I was up west coast oh Scotland (loch Awe) fishing last week and boy that stuff was a life saver we were covered in dead beasties lol
