I used to use 2 metres mobile - G8WSC - but now only pay my licence money to keep my call sign active.

Its was a standard Trio (Now Kenwood) setup in the car, so 50 to 100w from memory, feed that into infective 1/4 helical was probably only chucking out about 25W erp.
-
The valve linear was mains powered, and used at home :)
-
The kenwood/trio had 100w amp built-in as did the sommerkamps, think they were a re badged kenwood.
my transceiver of choice due to cost was a multimode 2 or a jumbo.
as for mobile linears had a few, ct163x,B300, had some that i cant remember the name of,built in cooling fans etc, all 12v.
and the antenna was a 9ft 1/4wave whip. (no coils)

:y
So CB radio is still legal to use then , i seem to recall something to do with certain units having too much power and interfering with the police signals years ago :-\

Yes, lets start an OOF CB gang. It would be great on the OOF get-togethers to have a chat and a good laugh on the CB. :y :y
-

Swearing would be banned on our channels. :y :y

So how far do these cb's reach in distance , can you speak to people in america on them :-\
-
I used to use 2 metres mobile - G8WSC - but now only pay my licence money to keep my call sign active.
Ron.
Hope not Ron. The amateur radio license is free now. I only have to renew every 5 years. :y
-

It all depends on the sunspot 11 year cycle and mode of trainsmission. Do a Google search. :y
-

In reality, legal CB sets are good for only a few miles, can be improved by elevation etc. The 27MHz in particular is a bit busy with various other things, limiting range.
Atmospheric effects can cause interesting effects, often a one sided conversation to hundreds of miles away.
But with standard, UK legal gear, you wouldn't stand much chance of talking to me, for example.

they way the skip is running at the moment, a decent set up, running some power, getting to the U.S.A.. be no problems, most of Europe is in range aswell,
fire the burner up :y

Why would we want to talk to you when we have advanced to the anti social internet thing lol ;D ;D

AM and SSB becoming legal for CBers soon, apparently.

Might have to get out and dust off the old President set, that Buzby made me take out of a company LandRover series 3, by threatening the company's radio licence as we all had a 2 way system, pre mobile phone days........ :D :D

Ah, yes, Auntie Mary was always better than Funny Mode back in the 80s. Not sure I understand more.
SSB was more to increase channels? Last time I fired on a CB, 40 channels was about 39 too many ;D

SSB has higher spectral efficiency, giving more channels, but the biggest advantage is that it's more power efficient. You can get the same distance as AM with as little as an eighth the transmit power. :y :y
-
They've done away with the CB licence a few years back. You don't need one anymore to use a CB radio. With AM and SSB included now I think it's a good time to dust off those radios and get transmitting. :y
-
I was a CB'er too in my teenage years! :y
Living in a valley I couldn't get a great signal, but if the conditions were right I could chat to people on Portland which is about 25 miles as the crow flies across Lyme Bay! :y
-
Awaiting feedback on the one martin bought , if any good will be rubber ducking next month at Billing :D

Something of a compromised antenna position though, will make it quite directional having a big ground plane to one side :y
-
Only place that was easily accessible and didnt want it on the roof as would have to remove it every time it went in garage ;)
