Title: Thanks for the welcome, caution for Jimbob
Post by: Jelly60 on 17 June 2008, 11:28:29
Firstly, may I take the opportunity to thank the many people who welcomed me to the Forum

It was especially nice to hear from Lizzie, being a woman.

I've owned several Omega's think they are fantastic cars, and I'm sure the Forum will be of a big help to me, with its blend of technical knowledge chat and humour.

I don't appreciate school boy humour Jimbob, please in future keep comments like that to your self

You have a pussy cat as your avatar!
If you want to misinterpret peoples friendly comment surely thats your problem and you should remove your mind from the sewer!
Just an observation!

:(  No offence meant, but you cant come on a male oriented forum with an avatar like that and not expect some banter  :y

On a more serious note - this seems to be a double post of what's in the newbies section...

Thank you for your very kind and understanding comments, I am broad minded and have a sense of humour, but if you want to get more women members on the Forum it is reasonable to expect that they be treated with some respect.

I love your fighting spirit Jelly!

However, as Debs (The Brains!) points out there is a lot of banter, and we all give as good as we take in the General Chat section. Jimbob didn't mean any harm, he was just doing what any man does best! I would advise you to just look through some of the old threads under this heading to see what we mean!

This site is great for its socializing as much as the tremondous advice on motors!  You just need an 'open mind' at times, bearing in mind that 98% of the membership is male!

Is it just me .. or does trying to dictate who says what and where on your first day on the forum seem just a teeny weeny bit .... shall we be polite and say "ambitious" ???

May I kindly advise you NOT to read ANY of the jokes published in "General Chat" ... from your quote .. you won't appreciate them .. :)

I am sorry it has come to this so early on. If you remember i started by thanking everyone for their kindness, and then at the end just said I felt offended by the comments of Jimbob

Remember these are the very first words he said to me and was well aware of their meaning.

Some of your tone especially Mrs Bump aren't nice at all. And are unhelpful to new members

On a side note Ljay / Mrs Bump asked me for an example of a double entendre, so i gave her one  ;D

Oh and Jelly... if you think you've been offended....

You should try being constantly told that you are homosexual with another forum member...

The amount some members go on about it - I'm almost starting to believe it myself ;D ;D ;D

The forum is split into sections, Omega Help, Electrical etc.

General chat is where we rant, rave and tell jokes and take the weewee out of each other.

Well this thread has provided some entertainment on a mundane Tuesday morning.

I have to say this is the best forum I have ever been involved with, the humour is great no matter what some say.

I think when you are new to a forum sometimes it's best just to read for a while to get a general gist of how the forum runs, some of them i have been on are so anal it's untrue.

Keep up the good work chaps & chapettes.  :y

Voted ... :)

If all innuendo, banter, p*** taking etc etc was banned from the site it would cease to exist in days ...

When I first started in chat rooms/forums etc etc I was taught to "lurk" for a while to get the feel of things .. my guess is the young lady didn't and just fired away ... no wonder she was shot down ...

It is a shame, as new members must always be made welcome, however making your first post a "warning" to a regular member was never going to work ....

With luck she'll reconsider and return  ....  :y :y

Well i have read this post from start to finish.

IMO .....
maybe jimbob should have tested the water before making a comment about her pussy!  ;D ;D ;D

Jelly i deal with an all male enviroment day in and day out(thats what you get for being in the armed forces) you really need to give as good as you get and not take anything to heart!

Look at me i have single handed made one of the members a newbie 3 times or was it 4 :-/ (ask loo-knee ;D ;D)

I think leaving and saying that we wont help you is a bit premature. if you post for help in the general section. you will always be given sound advice without any banter! if you need help your always welcome to ask  (i have been a mechanic now for 10yrs not too confident on the omega at the mo (getting their ) aircraft is my thing!)

the more birds we get on her the better. but if you want to leave so soon. good luck to you maybe you might come back some time soon. your always welcome!

That was my suspicion from the beginning.   There is someone who appears from time to time from 'the dark side' isn't there?

If she is for real, she can't belong to many other forums - this is the most good natured, helpful place I know.

Going back to the "lessons" idea, I think we need to get back on track here and see if indeed we can learn something.

My take as above, is as follows

If she found it offensive then that is her choice. It's not wrong to be offended - it's down to individual discretion.

But I still maintain she could have achieved a much better outcome by dealing with it far more effectively and discreetly in PM, rather than come along as a newbie and bash a long standing member on the public boards.

While as a commnity we may well need to learn something - I think Jelly does to - mainly in the form of resillience and tact.

I think it would be best if there were no further discussion on this, Jelly is probably watching as a guest having a good giggle at all the comments she has stirred up, she must have know what she was getting into having observed.
There are some members of this forum would never be on if they took offence but seem to insist on coming back for more.

STOP who is the winner here?????? Jelly. imho.

Some people just have to lighten up a bit and take a joke.

Top girl :y :y 8-)

You know when you look at the site the banter that goes on, and shouldn't really take it to heart, it is all just good fun, if you don't like the general chat area you don't have to visit it, you can stick the the general omega chat and just use the site for advise from some very knowledgeable people, personally not being a lot of help in that area, I stick to general chat, for a laugh  :y :y

Although the comment was funny, I probably wouldn't have made it until I had got the cut of someone jib. It just goes to show how soon things that could have been easily sorted, get out of hand.

OK, I have obviously missed all this - apologies, it was hectic at work.

Sadly, it would appear (and I haven't seen the offending posts), we have alienated a new member, which is unacceptable  :'(.  A member has joined, looking for help with her (?) car, and ended up being universally attacked from what I can see here  >:(

Yes, it is a male dominated forum, and yes, boys will be boys, but had it of been a face to face discussion and you had seen the obvious upset caused, I'm sure each and every one of us would have been a little more understanding.

Obviously I am not saying don't have a laugh and a giggle, but just be aware that new members may not quite know what regular OOFers are like, so just be aware.

To Jelly, if you are still reading this, we welcome you if you want to sign up again.  I'm sure we can advise on your car problems.  Just be aware that in the General Chat section, a certain amount of banter takes place.  Generally no offence is intended, though often provoking a response is.

Oh, and I voted yes.  Not because I thought the comment was necessarily out of order, but because the response to Jelly's 'complaint' was offensive, unexpected, and to be honest, disappointing.

I will add, I see nothing wrong with Jimbobs original comment, but perhaps when it was obvious that it caused distress, perhaps things could have happened differently.

Now, regular members know that pretty much anything goes in general chat, but I understand things went awry in Newbie section?  Remember, its a place to welcome new members, not the opposite

Remember that admins also have commitments outwith the forum.  For various reasons I will not explain at this time, my online time is limited at the moment as, I know, are other admins.

Rather than looking for more admins, perhaps some more thought should be put to the purpose of the forum, as explained by TheBoy previously.

We are a community who have a really good online presense.  It is a pity that the obvious bad uptake to a response meant in good intent was not 'policed' by those members who were online at the time, rather than allow the matter to degenerate into the loss of a member, the potential asset of which must now remain an unknown - and she is still with an Omega that requires repair.....

It was intended as a joke and we all know it...

Alas, if a woman insists on showing her pussy, she must take the flack ;D

My wife showed me her pussy once....it was so ugly had too hit it with a shovel 3 times just to get it too stop growling...then she made give it the kiss of life. :P ;D

I appreciate what TB says but just because someone is new they dont have the right to have a public go at an existing member!
If someone wants a warm welcome, then dont start out as agressive!

I see it from both sides, unfortunately...

The self same comment that I have used myself in other circumstances was made and, unfortunately, it caused offence this time round, despite its fnarr fnarr intent.

Had the same comment been made to the same person in a few weeks time then, most likely, substantially less offence would be taken - but there again, perhaps not.

Remember that an online 'persona' is exactly that - a front of a person who could be absolutely anyone.

An innocent remark made to a friend of long standing would make a completely different impression when made to a minister/priest/mother in law on first meeting......

Can see both sides of this, altho whilst i agree with tbs comments about the loss of a new member, do feel jelly was over sensitive about her pussy.  I voted with Jimbob by the way.  Also upset as never got to see jelly's pussy (avatar).
