Title: Front & rear disc and pad replacement
Post by: Andy A on 21 June 2014, 18:13:48
Any reason why I shouldn't use Brembo or Mintex discs + pads on the front and rear?

Experience really Andy, there have been most makes tried over the years the forum has been running and as Rob says, genuine front discs and pads for the front and whatever for the rear. The Omega is a big heavy car and the genuine fronts last longer and cope better :y

I will listen to the voice of experience without question in the future!  ;)

Thanks Pete and Rob.  :y

Took your advice Rob and ordered the VX front disc's + pads kit.  :y

When I unpacked the box, there was an opened packet that contained 4 bolts originally. Part number, GM 13441811. Two of the four bolts where missing.

Are these bolts suppose to be part of the kit or have they just found there way into the box?

I've tried Mintex discs and pads on mine a few years ago, threw away after a few months (including a skim, and replacement set), so good choice to avoid :y

You only get 2 bolts, as that's all that comes with the pad kit (as you only need to undo 1 bolt to change pads, although both to change disk).

OK to reuse old bolts though, with a fresh dab of threadlock

If you buy the discs and pads together as a kit then why on earth don't they put 2 and 2 together and supply the 4 bolts.  :o It's a crazy world we live in.

Thanks for the heads up on the Mintex. Will avoid like the plauge.

At least I know that there should only be 2 bolts.  :y

2 bolts come with all GM front brake pads as said you only need to undo 1 each side to swing caliper around to replace pads.Think they must box up pad/discs as a bulk buy set hence why you dont get 2 per side.

Dab of threadlock and jobs a good,n even if re usiing old bolts :y

Remember to degrease the discs before fitting. Sorry if that's teaching to suck eggs, but I've seen it done. Failure to degrease will result in no braking and contaminated pads.

Any degreaser will do - gunk, jizer, even brake cleaner.

Washing up liquid and a scourer even... cleaned off with kitchen roll :y

Pitted and worn front disc brakes threw up an advisory at the MOT a couple of weeks ago.

Without access to TC how much should I expect to pay for genuine GM discs and pads?

I hear that Mintex are poor but for £45  on Ebay, I'm tempted.

Thanks, Al. Maybe I can get a discount because they know me quite well at my local Vx dealer. :y

If I could get genuine GM for £70 I'd be happy. :y

Presumably the retail price is some way north of that figure..... :-\

I'll see what they offer. £70 seems hopeful now for genuine GM.

I doubt you'll get it under TC price.

Put another way, the genuine discs will last for two pad changes, pattern/after market might just scrape one...

Twice the useful life for about a third extra on the price :y

I've just given my local VX dealer a bell.

£146.32.....dropped to £132.26 when I pleaded poverty...... :'(

Looks like Ebay Mintex for £43.... :-\.

They don't take TC, Al.

Looks like they are charging retail less about 5%.... :-\

If they stock go in and ask for a set...

When the spotty yoof comes back with the box, plonk £100 on the counter :y

When he looks all puzzled, explain that it's a fair price, and all you have on you... or of course, he could always cart them back to the stores ::)

I was quoted by my local VX stealer...... £180 for the front discs and pads, just told them to "go away" ;D ;D

£180? I could buy 3 sets of brakes for that!!

I have used Mintex discs on the front of my td auto and my dti and think they are fine for the price. I find the pads are "dirty" in that they make a lots of dust so now use Pagid and they work well without the mess.

Do bear in mind that I drive my Omega's quite sedately (as I now prefer economy and comfort than speed) and therefore the brakes do not get to much of a hard time.
