Are you one of those lucky bastards who falls fast asleep as soon as your head hits the pillow?
Who sleeps for eight hours solid without even needing to take a piss during the night?
Who wakes refreshed and full of energy with a boner that just won't quit until you've used it on your wife/girlfriend/ wife's sister/ boyfriend?... ::) ::) ;)
I myself are somewhere in the middle. I'd class myself as a six out of ten sleeper. Okay but not great...
-
Falling asleep easily and waking up full of energy are long gone Dr.
Although all other aspects are working just fine thankyou vey much. :)
I do wonder what happened to the days of waking up bright as a button. I was defo an early bird as a lad. Changed to a night owl pre teens. :-\ odd.

I think that most people don't sleep so well as they get older. :-\
A while back I tried those herbal tablets. They did SFA really. :-\
-
I do think all this stuff about light levels and portable screens is utter rubbish in relation to sleep disorders though.
Tv's in bedrooms. Mobile devices. Shift work and jobs affecting body clocks. Non of that was relevant at the time I turned into a night owl, as they call it.

I'm certainly far more of an owl than a lark.
If I went to bed at 10.30 I'd be awake for hours on end. Getting my head down at 2.00 a.m. suits me better. :)

All of the above, but I suspect the little blue pills in your Ovaltine don't help Dr Opti the ;D

I'm pleased to announce that chemical assistance is unnecessary......... for now. ;D ;D

Whatever time I go to bed I'm out like a light. :y :y Always need a piss between three and half past, up like a lark at 06.00 but never piss proud, unfortunately :D ;D ;D
-
I generally sleep like a complete and utter bastard! :y
-
My answer would be No.no.no.and no.
Takes me hours to go to sleep. when i do its for a couple of hours.Wake up every morning feeling like sh#t. Last time i tried the blue pill did nothing after the wife turned the light on. ;D

same here.. I can never sleep at 10 or 11 pm even if I want to.. but the main reason is our neighbours .. they always make noise..
and I'm sensitive about it.. but if a silent place is supplied I can sleep easily..
if I can sleep 7 hours it will be enough..
and as for waking up ;D it takes nearly half an hour :-\

Insomniac, but always try to go to bed at the same time as Mrs TB. TBH, it matters not what time I go to bed, it always takes ages to drop off.
Oddly, I think I'm getting better as I get older.
For me, most forms of medication make me sleep. Popped a couple of mild pain killers a couple of hours ago, and really fighting it, and just about to pop a stronger one now, so I have a chance of waking up for work in the morning.
-
I have experienced that if you eat sweet things or eat more than necessary at night you can hardly sleep.. so imo blood sugar level is important.. however, a very low sugar level also dont help :-\
and the level of stress ..
-
Out like a light most nights with medication pain killers , awake most mornings at 6am for a cup of tea :) Before diagnosed diabetic i would be up 3 times through the night for a pee but now under control :)

An old chinese doc used to swear by eating tuna in the evening :-\
I'm usually asleep by 11:30 and up by 6 am but had a weird blip this weekend, Sunday 8pm - 6 am then took the first dose of a new medication and slept( knocked out :o) 10:am -3pm and last night slept 9pm -06:30. I shan't be taking them any more needless to say

Worried about the quality of my sleep I have just invested in a Misfit Shine. It monitors your sleep and activity using movement sensors. So far pretty impressed with it, although it is a little querky to use I am sure I will get used to it.
Last night it measured that I slept for 8 hours and 32 minutes, which going by the clock seems pretty accurate. It also detected that I was in deep REM sleep for 5.5 hours of that time which was broken up in to 6 stages. Considering the heat here that is not unreasonable to believe and after a sleep deprived weekend due to illness I did wake up more refreshed than usual.
So far me likey, but we shall see. The next question is should I get one for the missus as I am worried about her health and thus trying to get her more active. ::)

Nope, just a very small and slim watch like device.....which also acts as a simple watch.....

Must be going soft admitting to any of those traits ;D

The only way I can get off to sleep is with a tipple, or three ish, always wake to go to the loo in the middle of the night, hopefully I wont wake at 5 or 6 cos often will not be able to get back off. I long for the day when I could go to bed, sleep without problem for 7 hours or more and wake refreshed, a very distant memory............ :( :(

Not sure but, the iphone app I have goes under the pillow, it includes noise and movement. Main parameter it looks for is breathing rate. I believe. But not certain.
It does seem to be reasonably accurate. I haven't used to for a while though, as I'm fully aware I don't get enough sleep. Especially on shift. While I may be on here at silly o'clock, I use it like reading a book. Takes the mind off.
Although that back fired over the weekend as house valuations proved more encouraging than first thought and opened up a whole new market that was previously unavailable to us. Still awake at 4am searching right move. ...Fail ;D

The next question is should I get one for the missus as I am worried about her health and thus trying to get her more active. ::)
Well, whatever you do don't buy her a bicycle. That won't work.
Have you considered buying her a bicycle? I have a nice one here. A year old and, ohh, about 12 miles on it. I'm sure we can do a deal... ::)
-
Tend to sleep in 3 to 4 hour slots. Sleeping in different beds on a regular basis while travelling probably accounts for that but all things considered then not bad and not too tired in mornings unless committed to early start.
iPod goes on for 20 mins or so when needed.

thats the worst :( in the past I also traveled long distances periodically .. and concluded that different type of beds(different softness) -pillows(height) - noise- environment temp effects your sleep in a bad way :(
-
I dread going away. On holiday or visiting family or friends. Beds are ALWAYS too hard for me. Pillows are always the wrong height. So I always wake with back problems, and sleep poorly. Trying to get comfortable for most of the night, although its not possible to find a bed that suits everyone.
We have a sprung base and memory foam mattress at home.
Although a family member has a water bed. Quite simply the most comfortable thing I've ever laid on. No pressure points on shoulders and hips, no dip in the lumber spine area through lack of support in between. A perfectly straight spine with even pressure all along the body when laid side on. They have adjustable heaters for winter and summer, or the water would be too cold and would cause a chill, and the water level has to be set for you or as a couple.

A few thoughts while I was trying to sleep last night.
Nocturia. The need to get up and pee. Easily resolved. Don't drink anything the night before then have a paracetemol when you get up to get rid of your dehydration headache and three mugs of coffee/tea. ;D ;D
I stayed in England recently and couldn't believe the light pollution even with curtains closed. Bearing in mind our bodies wake up with light, if your bedroom is light that cannot help no matter what you have become used to. You can get blackout blinds.
Stress and activity. Most folk lead fairly stressful lives. Some of it is good but then slump in front of Tv and watch something stressful- Drama or a film. Then go to bed expecting to come down from that high and pop off to sleep. I suspect in an ideal world you would watch the film, then go out for an hours walk with the dog, come back sit and have a chat, then go to bed.
Food and drink. More bad practices. It is tempting to throw down loads of food and drink late in the day to assuage the rigours of the day and because you have earnt it. Problem is that causes your body to work overtime and heats you up. That makes you hot in bed.
Bedroom ambient temp. I think modern houses are far too hot in the bedroom. Again we treat ourselves because we can/or deserve it.
Beds. I agree with Dr Gixer. Memory foam mattresses and pillows are the best thing since sliced bread. I haven't tried a water bed .
Power naps. (In Spain we would call that a siesta). I have quite a few friends in Britain who admit to power naps in the afternoon. Not easy if you have a job. Again that is how nature designed our bodies. It is we that impose the "eight hours sleep at night" on our bodies.

Sounds like more sex is required all round! ::) ;D
-
I don't have any problems other than not getting enough. ;)
Dog usually gets me up between 4 & 6.
I find a strong fresh coffee sets me up in the morning, unless I'm nursing a real hangover from the night before.
-
I can be boderline narcoleptic, ;D
if you dont need me for a while............zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
great when travelling,
-
Night Owl and sometimes sleep well, other times very badly, the only consistent thing is no consistency with sleep times and sleep length. After a bad night of two I will often have a nap between 6 and 9pm which has always been my lowest point of the day. One of my most creating times for designing and programming has always been between 10pm and 2am which can often go on to as late as 4am, before I feel like sleeping. :o :o :o
I have tried everything from blackout curtains to no curtains and found it makes no difference.
My mother was a night owl, just like me and my two brothers, whereas my dad was a lark, always in bed by 10pm and up at 6am, my sister is the same.
