I have several propane bottles, 2 from the caravan, 1 for the Barbie, 1 for the Patio heater and 1 for the garage heater. I also have a load of C206 lantern cylinders. I went out to the back garden a couple of weeks back and noticed the larger cylinders missing. Mrs YZ had put them in the garage as they looked unsightly outside.  ::)
I soon shifted them back outside again.  :y

Must admit that TB's incident has made me wary of them, but I'm hoping that being outside to 'vent' will prevent it happening to me.  :-\

In saying that, a neighbours gas Barbie blew up large week, as they were using it. Thankfully nobody was hurt but I assume it must have been leaking.  :-\  Made one hell of a bang.  :o

Hard to believe that one cylinder going pop can cause all that shit to happen  :o

It's probably more a case that it started leaking slowly and, once the mixture of air and fuel inside the building got to within its' explosive limits a source of ignition set it all off. The gas in a cylinder excludes air, so it can't explode on its' own.

I doubt the the LPG cylinder exploded. More likely valve leaking slowly, LPG build up at floor level with little or no escape route, the gas must of been the perfect mixture 2-10% Gas in Air then somehow it got a source of Ignition at floor level. It's amazing considering the Devastation no one was killed :o

The more solid the building the bigger the explosion as it will contain it and allow the pressure to build up for longer. This is why the casing design on a nuclear bomb is critical to its yield. :o :o :o

Waves are very efficient transmitters of energy, so once the energy is released with the breaking of the garage shell then the energy in the compressed air shock wave dissipates the energy very spectacularly into the surrounding area. :o :o :o

Storing the gas cylinders outside will mean that if the gas leaks it is more likely to be dispersed from where it is heavier than air and sinks to the ground and if it does ignite it has not got the containment area to create a strong pressure wave. Likewise if you do store the cylinders in a contained area the weaker the building, like a wooden shed (especially with windows) the faster and at a lower pressure the containment shell will fail and the much smaller the explosive effect. ::) ::) ::)

This is why I keeps my camping gas cylinders in the shed away from direct sunlight and they not only have a ball valve seal, but also a secondary screw in plug with washer. Personally, I wouldn't trust a turn off screw valve on its own. ??? ??? ???

A resident of one of the damaged houses said: "There was such a loud explosion I couldn't think what it was.

"Ten minutes later I heard another one so I got up to see what was going on.

I would have got up after the first bang ;D

You're forgetting, this is Bletchley. Admittedly the more upmarket end, but still full of Bletchley-ites. I'm surprised they got up at all.

I am still amazed over the amount of immediate damage a half full 1.8kg cyclinder could make. Though had my garage been integral, we would have lost the house. Had I been in the imaginary bedroom over the integral garage, not sure I would have escaped....
