HI Guys,
after a high speed trip a while ago i blew out the Cats and half the EGR system. I had the cats removed but its now got a real "bark" to it. The rear Muffler (box) is shagged as well (i think) would fitting a new one fix the problem or do these things just sound like crap without the CATS?
-
I've heard that many people say that when u remove cats the engine sounds just ridiculous :(
-
Un obstructed, the exhaust will be noisier... aftermarket, ie custom, back box could be tuned to be quieter to compensate for the lack of cats :y
-
I'll loan this topic to ask my own question, if you fit an X or H decat-pipe does it still sound as bad as with empty cats?
-
So what you are saying is a "normal" system in good condition but without the Ctas is going to sound like crap!?

If you take away restriction of flow from the exhaust then the gasses can escape quicker and also carry some of the detonation from within the engine and therefore sound louder and crisper.
Hence the name 'Silencers' because they restrict the escape of exhaust gasses and absorb sound from engine.
I had a stainless exhaust fitted (kept the front small Cat) which is unrestricted.
I agree it does sound silly on a car of this type and it sounds worse still on mine because it is an auto ;D
If I get mine through it's MOT I'm going back to the guy who fitted it to see if he could put a back box on to help quieten her down a little.

A decent exhaust place should be able to produce an exhaust to make the exact noise you're after :y
-
Do you know of such a place, Al? The usual run of fitting shops (e.g. K-F) seem to employ no better than trained monkeys who know nothing about exhaust tuning and merely fit what the book says!

I thought only people who know nothing about cars went to k f

Pipecraft in Basildon would be worth a try, as they do allsorts of custom exhausts.
Reasonably local to you.

RSR in Redhill, if they still exist :y mate of mine had a system tuned to order for his AX, he couldn't rate them highly enough :y
Good reviews from various peeps too by the look...

Once again, OOF exceeds expectations!
Thanks, gents.

Its not worth the expense (or effort!) to fit a custom exhaust here, they all want over 300 pound just to fit the rear Silencer! (box) What im looking at doing is buyins one off Ebay ex UK and shipping it here, yes its much cheaper than any other option, you cant get parts for Omegas here.
my general question was will this be enough to quieten it down or will i need to fit resonators in place of the two main Cats as well?
-
You won't know until you fit it... might be cheaper to get one made to suit locally than ship two or three over from here :-\
-
been down that road here for NZ$100 (50Pound) i can buy and ship one here., Cant believe nobody has a standard exhaust without Cats somewhere!
-
Cats are, in principle, required for MoT :y a petrol car post '92 presented without should fail if they're missing...
So nope... absolutely no guarantee that the noise will improve/get worse as the offtheshelf systems are loosely based on the original system, with cats. If you want a noise for your exact situation, you have one choice: buy custom :-\
-
I realise you guys in the UK have to have them, we dont down here! :y

Lucky buggers ;D
Doesn't improve your options though :-\ aftermarket from Europe will be tuned to create a noise either similar or louder than a stock system with cats. What you need is specifically one tuned to be quieter without cats... and the only way is custom locally so that they might be able to hear it in its current state and tone it down :-\
