Title: Refurbing alternator
Post by: joshwyatt on 30 June 2014, 21:03:40
Is there anyone on OOF who fancies refurbing an alternator with new bearings and capacitor?
One of the 3.2's had a good second hand unit fitted, but a year later and it's started to sound noisy again. It's the 120 amp original Bosch unit.

Last one I bought (well exchanged) from VX was £160

Would like to pick another one up to refurbish one day

I have a 120amp alternator off a 2.6 Elite which I am going to fit tomorrow to the 2.6 CDX I collected today as the one on it is not charging, I will attempt to fix this with the help of the how to on page 1 of the guides, as I do not intend to pay £100's on a exchange. I will let you know how I get on.

I can refurb it if you can get it to me.

No capacitors in an alternator though  :y

Regulators start at about £20 on the bay for the 120amp alternators, not looked for the bearings yet. :y easy job, just went out to the garage and took the one off the spare I have, all back together in less than 10 min :y

A pair of SKF quality bearings are circa a tenner for the alternators.  :y

Josh, I've never done one, but to quote Topgear, "how hard can it be?"

I'm sure we could muddle through it :y

Thank you TB  :y

I've pm'd DTM about it, but from a logistical point of view it'd be great for us to have a go. I'll PM DTM to check if that's ok with him  :y

Worse case, I can probably get it to MDTM's workplace easy enough, or even find some excuse to go up to see him and eat all his choccie biccies again ;D

:y It's on the marked police car, so I'll try and take it off soon

I'd forgotten about the DTI Astra, it's over in Bicester...so hopefully we can arrange a time for us to have a go with it!
