Title: Millbrook test drive update
Post by: bob.dent on 18 June 2008, 12:37:25
Well, had a great day at Millbrook yesterday although one small disappointment was that there were quite a few major manufacturers absent compared to previous years at this event. Those that were present were Cadillac, Chevrolet, Citroen, Ford, Hummer, Honda, Izuzu, Khia, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz, Peugot, Saab, Subaru and good old Vauxhall.

Some of the cars I drove included Citroen C5 V6 Tdi Executive, Peugot 407 Coupe, Saab 9-3 1.9TTiD, Honda Accord ES 1.8 i-VTEC, Lexus LS250, Mercedes CLS320, Ford Mondeo (can't remember which model!) to name a few. However, the highlight of the day was the VXR8 6.0 V8 Monaro!! What an awesome machine, I really didn't want to finish as it was so addictive. On the hilly Alpine circuit it was beautifully balanced and I felt confident pushing it's handling harder and harder through the corners and hairpins . Then on to the high speed banked circuit.....OMG, flooring the throttle caused the world to erupt. Supposed to be restricted to 100mph but....well......you can't keep to that in a Monaro can you!! ::) I was hitting 140 before I even had a chance to glance at the speedo. [smiley=evil.gif] Oh and the soundtrack was to die for. This easily has to be one of the best road going cars I've ever driven, and I've driven some fast cars in my time. :y :y :y

I was completely knackered by the time I got home but still had a BIG smile on my face. :y

How many of the cars were better than yours?

Erm, let me think about this for a millisecond........oh yes, must be the Monaro. ::) ;D

Seriously though Martin, I have to say that quite a few of these new cars really are very good and several of them were actually more comfortable than my MV6 (and a damn sight more expensive!!). However, it's difficult to give a proper evaluation as the test drives only last around 20 minutes per car and most of that 20 mins is spent thrashing it around the circuits without paying too much attention to creature comforts, audio systems etc. ;)

Apart from the Monaro - would you have one over the MV6?

Would you prefer to drive any other of the cars over your MV6?

Hmmmm.......that's a toughie. :-/ if I were in a position to make a choice it would depend on circumstances and available finance . Cars like the Mercedes CLS320 or CLS350 might be an obvious choice but then lack the load space of the MV6 Estate. I have to say I really enjoyed the Citroen C5 V6 tdi Executive which is also available as an estate (sits back and waits for the inevitable abuse!!) but it really was refined, very spacious and soooo comfortable. The V6 diesel was powerful and smooth and actually sounded rather nice.

On the other hand I do love my MV6 and glad I don't need to make any such decision at the moment. ;)
