Title: rattle now part fallen of

hi chaps, i had like this very tiney rattle on tick over. then when driving down my road a part fell off, rattle now stopped. it looks like a heat shield of some sort its about 10 inches long 1 and a half  wide and is curved looks like it maybe for exhaust maybe also has 2 securing bolt holes by look of it .what does it shield and is it very important. :(

sounds like a heat shield alright, I have removed loads over time and not had problems. you can put them back on with a big washer but not really worth the hassle in my opinion
