Hi peeps, my dads 3.0 started running badly, very noisy (sounds like a bag of spanners), down on power and lumpy. The eml is on. It's been sat up for a few weeks. I did a paperclip test and it came back with cam sensor. I changed the cam sensor with a second hand one off my brothers breaker today.
It just about struggles into life now, the eml is still on and it still sounds like a bag of spanners, a huge rattle from the top end. The crank sensor was changed by me for a genuine one about 2 years ago if that's relevant. I've checked the 1-3-5 plug wells, no oil there. I'm planning on stripping it down tomorrow to check the 2-4-6 wells for oil (the thinking being that it could be full of oil, shorting spark and not firing on cylinder(s)).
Anyone got any ideas before I do that? DIS/coil packs maybe? No oil getting to head causing noise? Dunno

Any oil in it :-\ has it been stood for a while? If more than a week it will take a while for the followers to fill up...
Suggest the following... add some wynns engine oil flush, get it upto temp by idling only (don't drive or rev it),
Drop the oil, change the filter, add a can of wynns lifter treatment then top off with fresh oil, should take about 5.7ltrs after the lifter treatment.
While you're checking the plug wells, you might as well change them... along with the air filter. Then recheck the codes and report back :y
Dis pack and oil/water in the plug wells generally raises misfire codes... so you can probably rule them out :-\

hope its not a loud knocking from top end, i did have a 3.0l that lost belt tension putting the cams out, ran but terrible with loud top end knocking. just a thought. :-\

It is loud knocking from the top end. Barely driveable as if it's running on 1 cylinder (stalled twice while turning round on drive). If it has lost some tension and slipped teeth what's the likelihood of valve damage? The noise doesn't sound healthy at all :-[

If it is the followers would that damage the valves? And would it be so down on power?

Best be checking the belt too ::) though if its that bad, then its probably fooked...
Check the belt, if ok service it and go from there, but ffs stop trying to run it ::)

as above. check the belt, get the locking kit on to make sure alls correct then see how it goes from there really.

Given how reliable V6 cam sensors usually are, I wouldn't mind betting that the cam sensor code was actually triggered by incorrect cam timing, so yes, check the cam belt and cam timing before anything else.
Failing that, one or two failed hydraulic tappets might be a possibility. Give it some fresh oil and a dose of lifter treatment and see how it goes?

Is the engine rocking side to side in the engine bay at all?

Iirc v6 engines have had some cam mounts that came loose and snapped? That can cause quite some noise and maybe give the cam sensor code.

No the engine isn't rocking to the side. If the belt has slipped/lost teeth, how of you time it up? Is it still as per the dvd, or will the movement be outside the parameters of the tensioner, therefore requiring to be turned manually?

Ok, a few comments
1) 2.5 and 3.0 will NOT report miss fire codes (only the 2.6/3.2)
2) Cam sensor failure is all but unheard of unless the lead is damaged.
So, DIS pack or cam belt would be my guess with DIS pack being the more likely. :y
