A local garage(400 yards away) has agreed to change the wheel bearing on my TD Estate for £60 +VAT. I got the bearing yesterday from VX for £34.67 +VAT.
I'm more than happy with that. :y

400 yards?
You will be able to hear the cursing when they find out what they have let themselves in for ;D

Yep! ;D ;D ;D

Or, they've done them before, have appropriate tooling and can do it in an hour. Which is all possible, if somewhat unlikely.

He claims 1.15 to 1.30, but had to ask was it drum or hub mounted!!! Hmmmm. :-X
-
Well, got the bearing done, and he said it only took an hour! Result for £60. He tells me the other one is also worn so I will get that replaced ASAP. :y
-
With some appropriate equipment, you can bypass the Omega Factor that makes things complicated, and just get the job done. Once the hub is extracted, it's a straightforward job.

£60.
It would be worth me travelling to there should I need to get mine done.
Don't think there would be many places willing to do it for that if they knew what they can be like.

The way he described it, which involved a puller of the correct size and something through the bearing, he made it sound very simple. :y

He must belong to the Sassenach school of bearing replacement ... he made it look exceedingly simple and only took 40 minutes !! :)

Well, the noise has changed, but is still there to a lesser extent. Very strange, as the noise definitely disappears completely on right hand bends, which is why I, and the mechanic who did it, identified the RH wheel bearing, (which was shot anyway). I'm wondering if there is a bearing on the RH side of the diff which could give the same symptoms? :-\ :-\ :-\
-
Diff bearings wouldn't be subjected to cornering loads, so I think that's unlikely.
Might be a CV joint, but they very seldom give problems on an Omega.
More than likely it's the other wheel bearing which he's already identified as being suspect. :y

Thanks Kev, I'm going to change that anyway, but I can't figure out why it should disappear completely on RH bends. :-\ :-\ :-\

It varies and can be dependent on which race in the bearing has the damage (they area twin race bearing) and what and where the damage is
-
Given the hard life, weight wise, that my Estate has had, I guess I'm lucky they've lasted this long. :y

I had something similar when the inner brake pads rusted into position on the rear calipers. The inner face of each disc also rusted and I was getting a rumbling noise with slight changes of direction.
-
Thanks Andy, but I recently did all the rear brakes, discs and handbrake, and the noise started before that. :y
-
I have now had the LH bearing changed (for the same price), and the noise has completely disappeared, so clearly the worst bearing noise was coming from the much more badly worn LH bearing, despite the fact that the noise completely disappeared in RIGHT HAND turns. :-\ :-\ :-\ I hope this information may help owners with a similar noise to correctly identify the faulty bearing. :y :y :y

as i have said before never replace just 1 side if 1 has gone then the other probly not far behind += peace of mind. glad you got it sorted :y

its like us when we get old were all diffrent . but the genaral condition the same ::)
