In my decades of driving, I've never had a sports car of any kind. Always been a bit too sensible, (hang on, is my MV6 "sensible" ?).
Anyway, this is an itch that I may watch to scratch. Not interested and can't afford some super car. My ideal would maybe be a classic TR4, 5 or 6 but they are now expensive collectors items. The sensible choice would probably be a Mazda MX5, but they just seem a bit dull and uninteresting.
However a Chrysler Crossfire ? Ugly, fast, affordable, certainly interesting. But spares could be a problem. I have no idea about reliability. But I just kinda fancy one ::) One oddity is that I read somewhere that the front and rear wheels are different sizes.
Any comments ? What else should be on my radar ? A Merc SL would be nice, but for my budget it would be quite an old one with associated potential repair costs :(
I'm not about to splash out right now, just sort of looking around in case the time comes

Monaro VXR :y

Monaro VXR :y
I think Mrs TB fancies one after seeing some at Billing. Maybe not a VXR due to cost, maybe a10yr old 5.7
-
Chrysler Crossfire is basically an old shape Merc SLK with American build quality.. poor handling, poor reliability and oddball looks. Although I quite like the looks..
-
MX5 loads of fun :y :y
-
An SL 350 :-\ quick enough to be interesting, but steel rather than air sprung and therefore not as highly strung as the SL500 :y
Crossfire SRT-6 although rare is a pocket rocket with the supercharged 3.2 v6 from the SLK32 AMG...
-
...

......
Not that un-common, plenty of sporty Mercs have different tyres/rims front & back ........ even the Smart's rims are completely different (different width & offset - though the tyres are the same ???)

Clarkson likened the profile of the Crossfire to 'a dog taking a dump'..... :y
-
No sports cars on the list yet, then. ::)
A sports car needs to be light and pointy, with impeccable handling, and as at home on the track as on the road. Power to weight ratio - yes, but further down the list.
I think the MX5 is as close as we've got so far. Don't dismiss them without driving a properly sorted one. They are great fun, but a bit slow to be a true sports car.
Kit cars might be worth a look. Depends on budget, whether you need it as an everyday car or a summer toy and how handy you are w8ith the spanners.
-
Not sure if its classed as a "sports" car, but I always liked the look of the Mazda mx6. Not too many going about either
-
Or a Nissan 200
-
I'll get banished from OOF for this admittance ::), but I always quite liked the BMW Z3! :o ;D
-
Sunbeam Tiger.
Mk1 had 4.2 litre V8.......the Mk2 a 4.7 litre V8. :y
-

Ban him. :( :( :( :( ;D ;D ;D ;D
It's a hairdressers car for FFS. ;D
Whatever next, Sir Tig ......The Triumph spitfire and the MG Midget.
-
Honda S800. Extremely rare now and only really suitable for girls. :-\

I know it's hairdressers car but I can't help it! ;D
The Spitfire, Midget and all the old British 2 seaters are what I class as proper sports cars! :y The rest are just pale imitations... ::)
-
Sunbeam Tiger.
Mk1 had 4.2 litre V8.......the Mk2 a 4.7 litre V8. :y
Great in a straight line, but corners forget it ;)
I may be biased, but a TR is an affordable classic - earlier TRs up to and including TR4A are a bit scarce and pricey now (a good 4A will set you back £15K +), TR5 even more pricey, but a fair TR6 can be picked up for £5K - £7K. Spares readily available.
-
It depends on budget and if you're looking for a classic or car from an era gone by.
If you're considering a Crossfire then it must be a later "modern" with all the creature comforts that some of the suggestions cant offer .
I'd consider a Honda S2000 .
-

It's a 2 seater saloon car, though, not a sports car. Handles like a 3 series saloon (i.e. not remotely involving). Not a sports car.
Although it has a great engine, the S2000 is let down by its' chassis too, IMHO.
-
What about . . . . Nissan 300ZX ?
Yes I know it's a pimp/drugdealers car, but seems like a lot of car for what they cost now. I quite like japanese cars from this era. Actually, I'd probably end up just looking like an old pimp/drugdealer so maybe not ;D
-
I've owned two of those over the years - I love them, but they are also money pits.. very, very hard to find a good example now and when they break they tend to do so in complicated and wonderful ways! I'd still have another if I had space & money..
An easier to find alternative would be the MkIV Supra - in their day I think the 300ZX was a better looking car (and still has the nicer interior) but the exterior of the Supra has aged better I think..
-
I've owned two of those over the years - I love them, . . . . . .
Ah ok, so NOT a pimp/drugdealers car then ;) . . . . . or is it ;D
-
If you have deep pockets then the original Lotus Elan is a true sports car.
The Elan Sprint made between 1971 and 1973 pushed out 126 BHP and weighed in at around 700 KG. :y
If it's good enough for the delectable Emma Peel then it's good enough for you, Mr Rog. :y :y

I've lusted after a Triumph TR6 since 1969. I haven't even sat in one yet. :-\ :'(

MGBGT? Preferably V8. :y

;D ;D I'd have more cash if it were! ;D
Still they don't really fit the "sports" car thing - they're big GT cars like the Porsche 911 (well, current 911s anyway).
Speaking of Lotuseseses; how about a nice Esprit being sold by a friend of a friend: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/271542207690
Or a left hooker E-type? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Jaguar-E-Type-XKE-Series-1-Convertible-/261530517137
Or ... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ford-escort-van-six-wheeler-custom-van-/141345319474 ;D

The V8 I could be tempted by.......( if I had your wealth, Aaron) :y
I think that the prices of these are about to rise. :y
-
The E type looks great even if it is a left hooker. :y
Gotta love this line though : -" Imported from USA with all taxes paid , except Duty !" Er.... :-\ ;D
-
I missed that line about the duty ;D ;D
Opti - I, too, would prefer the V8 .. although many years ago (maybe 2001?) I knew a fella who bought an M reg one - he had it two weeks before it ate both headgaskets and then another month before it ate an ECU ;D Not a cheap car to run!

Why not? Did he not say he had a limited budget? I agree about the Lotus, Elan, Esprit, Eclat etc but good E-Types will surely be a bigger step up in price and if he wants to spend some dosh then there is plenty of choice. :y

It looks like a sports car though and James Bond had one! :P :y
It was in a Z3 that I was in my sole car accident when a mate powered out of a roundabout on an icy night, lost control and we pirouetted down the dual carriageway before slamming into the central reservation! :o ::)
The Z3 was a write off, but we were OK, until we repaired to the nearest pub where pretty soon we were written off too!! ;D

Exactly. Part of the attraction of the Crossfire is it seem to me that you can pick one up without spending stupid money, however there is the risk of not getting spares. With a big budget, the choice would be different, but this is a toy, a bit of fantasy, not a bank breaking investment.

My 6 was a '69 PI, great car to drive - as seen with kids seats in rear & luggage rack - had to sell it as with 2 kids took longer to load it up than to drive anywhere - got replaced with a Mk1 3 lit Ghia Granada :'(

Modern cheap sports car? Obviously an Elise or a VX220, both cheap (ish) now.
Older then its a Morgan +8, TVR Chimera, Alfa Spider or a Marcos
The Caterfield 7 things are another obvious choice, but there is always the MR2 for a bit more cheapness
-
350i? :y
Make sure the chassis is sound!
But yes, most V8 Trevcars would be ticking boxes. :y
They are basically a Kit car that comes ready-built, though, so make sure you're handy with the spanners!
Cerbera Speed Eight would be my choice in an ideal money-no-object world.

Yep, pick up a cheap project Elise with a grenaded K series engine perhaps? Most who go that route after other sports cars seem to end up underwhelmed, mind.

only 442 built, (lets sell an expensive car in a recession?) ::)
you wont be parked next to a similar car each time you go out like an MGB etc
I recon this one is very undervalued, mine is insured for £5500,

Jack of all trades, master of none. Although its pretty good in most respects, but you'll never get it to go as well or handle like a decent sports car... ...but then what do you expect for a couple of grand ;D

Apart from anything else, I won't fit in a sports car too well. One mans barge is another mans sports car.
Or, one mans sports car is another mans roller state. Which ever.
Most cars have a sports element, or they wouldn't go over 70 and take three weeks to get there.

A mid-life crisis, Mr Emd. I'm currently having one myself.
But what is the alternative?.......stop having sex......get an allotment....... join the Morris Marina owners club and talk about what great cars they are and how they should still be made today. :'(
Pablo Picasso reputedly said......" Die as young as you can but leave it as late as possible".......Good philosophy. :y

Anyway, about cheap sporty cars
If you can handle front wheel drive, you could do a hell of a lot worse then a VW Corrado if you can find one that hasn't been hammered / chaved up too much :y

With the 2.9 V6 up front a great little car. :y
Far better than the dumpy looking Golf with the same engine.

Yup, 160 bhp out of the box.
Stick a 68mm pulley and a chip and 190 - 200 bhp is there for the taking :D
Tickle it a little more and replace the gearbox with a VAG one off iirc a diesel golf and you have a seriously quick little car which with the longer ratios of the box is not bad on fuel either :)
A unmolested one will set you back 4 grand and the values are going up :y
Tbh, the reason i'm not converting my mv6 to a manual is because I quite fancy one as a weekend / summer play thing :D :D

Friend of mine picked up a good condition example with reasonable miles for £2k not so long ago - it's his track toy but so far has been refined, reliable and .. ok, far from economical ;D
They're a good buy if you can find one without apex seal issues.

Despite having only 9000 miles under it's wheels the man who bought ours insisted on a hot compression test. He was so keen to buy that he paid for it himself....(about £100 if memory serves)
Buyers always need to check that the car starts easily from hot. If they don't this can be a sign of low compression.......which can mean death to the rotary engine.
Expect 13 MPG if you boot it. :-\
Some unscrupulous 'Rxers' fit an 'upgraded' starter motor to mask hot starting issues.

I am pleased to confirm that the BMW Z3 is no match for a full fat Omega with a proper gearbox ;D
Was following one earlier and went to pass it and the lorry ahead of it... In third at 40, I nearly went through the Z3 after he failed to look over his shoulder (top down too). The look on his face was priceless as he shat himself ;D
Credit where it's due, he waved an apology and tried very hard to pull away, failing miserably ;D
So Rog, if you want a poncy two seater then the Z3 is just the ticket... If you want a real car, then either a Westfield or a TVR or a Monaro :y

Mk1 MX5 1.8 is a brilliant sports car, get one that has had a turbo or supercharger fitted and you'll have a cheap to buy, fast, reliable, well handling sports car :y
-
I've not sat in one but would a Westfield/Lotus super 7 be a tight fit for most people of normal girth? I'm guessing that TB wouldn't fit..... ::) ::) ;D
Depends on the car. Both Westfield and Caterham have brought out "wide" models as demand from the more portly driver has driven them to do so but the traditional chassis would present a tight fit to anyone with even a passing interest in the pie. ::) The Dax Rush is already reasonably wide at the all important "driver's @rse" part of the chassis.
Ditto the length of the footwells. Early cars weren't any good for tall drivers but they now work for people up to 6' and a fair bit over, although that tends to depend on choice of seat and pedal arrangement and how adjustable it all is.
Haven't tried TB for size but will do next time I see him. ;)
-
Even a widebody looked like it'd have to be turned into a single seater for me.. and I'd have to get used to sitting astride the propshaft ;D

Best used coupes: the alternatives
Audi TT
Fair price: £1,950
Remember the fuss when Audi introduced its Bauhaus-inspired TT in 1998? A unique design marked the car out as a style icon, and issues with high-speed handling were soon fixed with a rear spoiler, standard ESP and tweaked suspension. The TT went on to write its own chapter in Audi’s history, thanks to its sheer desirability, popularity and performance.
It’s now 15 years since Audi unveiled the TT, with its concept car looks and striking interior. Yet even today, it remains hugely desirable – especially with prices at under £2,000. Cheap cars don’t get much prettier, while VW running gear means low bills. Even at this price you can choose between Coupé or Roadster models, front or four-wheel-drive transmissions and 180bhp or 225bhp versions of the 1.8T engine.

I think I have just had a cerebro-spermatic accident :-X :y
Actually a LHD in West Wales would almost be suicide. The area has one of the highest motoring death rates relative to population in the UK, mainly due to nutters driving way too fast and lunatic overtaking on the country roads. With LHD you stand even less chance of seeing what's coming at you on the wrong side of the road. On the plus side, being on the other side of the car, maybe there's a better chance of survival ? :-\

As long as you can still see to avoid the wooly bollards.. ;D
I've been having a similar look recently with a view to replacing the M3 with something slightly, er, less eye watering to repair.. there's so little out there though in the inexpensive price bracket. Obviously (to appease Kevin) I'm broadening the definition of "sports car" to include anything basically "nippy, quick or fast with better-than-average handling" and in my case "able to withstand a session on track without grenading"..
I came down to:
MX5 - except I probably don't fit (never tried but people who've owned them keep telling me I won't, so..)
S2000 - see above!
MR2 - been there, done that, though in your case I'd highly recommend an MR2 Roadster.. generally bulletproof, great handling, nicely balanced and require a little more skill than the MX5 as they are easier to make swap ends due to the short wheelbase and engine in the arse end
Boxster (early, small engine) - not that quick and expensive to repair, but there are plenty around
350Z - coupe is just in the <£5k range, convertible a little more. Great car, little heavy for track work but comfy, quick and decent handling (not as nimble as something lighter, obviously)
Monaro - just about in the price range, too big & heavy for track work without eating suspension though, I suspect (maybe 2woody can comment on that)
Porsche 944 - very old, not exactly a looker but a nicer interior than an early Boxster, no idea about reliability but I'm half tempted by this one (http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/porsche/944/porsche-944-s2-1989/2360532)
So far that's my list and it's making me wonder if I can find a way to keep the M3 instead as the M3 (reliability aside) does everything I could want of it; it handles track time well (as long as you remember to take a spare set of pads, ahem!) and eats miles with ease, comfortable, very quick, decent handling (hush, Kevin!).. the SMG gearbox is a pain in the arris around town as BMW couldn't program a smooth 3rd-2nd downshift if they tried, but on the open road it's a joy..

Rog, a customer / friend of mine has a Dax Rush in black and chrome with a very nice 2ltr cossie engine under the bonnet.
Engines been tweaked (hybrid turbo / green injectors / remap) and pushes out iirc, 300bhp :D :D :D
I know over Christmas that he was on about selling it to fund another project this summer.
If your interested, I can have a word and sort some pictures out for you :y
Just a word of warning though, this thing will frighten the shite out of some superbikes if you can change gear fast enough so its not for the faint hearted ;)

Is a manual conversion feasible?

Sounds very similar to the one a mate of mine built. Number plate doesn't end in VKJ(iirc), does it?
EDIT: Ahh, actually, this was a kind of burgundy colour.
And yes, having tried it, they will stay with a superbike well into 3 figure speeds. Not quite as "chuckable" as the Westfield, IME, but still a formidable car and I'm currently pondering garage space availability should Rog not take up your offer. ::) :-X

3.0 944 quite quick,as is the 2.5 turbo, quite nice to work on too,cam belt etc all easily accessable :y

I sat in one at the Mazda showroom while the RX8 was being butchered by the service team.
The interior is cramped to say the least. :-\
Fine for women up to nine stones in weight and 5' 6" in height.........90% of owners. The other 10% being gay men. ::) ::) :)

Piss off, its nothing more than a beetle that's been sat on. ;D ;D ;D ;D :y

Perhaps it would help our choice of 'motor' if Mr Rog told us how much he was willing to spend.
£1000
£5000?
£10000?
£25000?
MORE.
I'm guessing that, unlike myself, 'old Rog' isn't short of a few bob. :y
Your only skint because you have tendency to 'get through wives' ;D ;D :D :y

He just needs more practice at getting rid of them... cheaply. ;)

Being in a show room, I guess it was the really gay Mk. 3 model? ;)
I've never found the Mk. 2 cramped, neither has Mrs. KW. I'm a shade over 6' and 15 stone and Mrs. KW is.. er.. appreciative of a broad driver's seat. :-X
Depends what you are used to, though, I guess.

I've got a 98 1.8 MX5 in today,got too say its a hoot to drive :y

Not sure where that point is heading, Afterall EP also owns/owned a Rover 220 targa :-X
Rover 220 Turbo to give it it's correct title :P
My Mx5 snotted the best the forum could offer and the 220 turbo certainly would but the Omega is an old mans car so I suppose it's to be expected ;)

It's not embarrassing, they are a good little car that gets slagged off by people who haven't driven them or can't drive very well ;D
